icedog & Veda yes that all chinese people want to own a MB but some buy BMWs onli for the reason that not all chinese are made of money. With the whole thing that Chiense want to own MB, my family doesnt drive BMWs or MBs but a Volvo. We are quiet comfortable and that don't own a MB cos we do not see the need to. 1) It is mainly an image of showing off to the others 2) The Chinese community is a community full of expectation 'my kid does medicine and drives a BMW 325i, he/she is going to be ritcher than your kid, u've failed as a parent' so inleiu they make they're kids work hard so then they can buy a BMW/MB because they want their children to not suffer they way they did as immigrants to a new country 3) Its all an image of 'My MB or BMW is more expensive than urs' *this is quiet evident in the western chinese communities, especially 'club' gatherings* 4) People in China do not see the point in saving money anymore. As the fastest growing economy people over there who have the money to splurge will do so and so they will strive to buy a MB or BMW for the sakes showing off.

If u guys wanna discuss this more in depth u r welcome to contact me someway or another because we are only scratching the surface right here.

As for importing Chiense vehicles, don't bother. btw i am a real chinese person and i really don't see the point in the importing of bad quality cars as my cousin in china owns a so-called 'Volkswagon jetta' when it really is a rebadged no-name chinese car.

1c3d0g, they'll get mad sure but they'll admit it. The Chinese that are buying BMW is simply because 1) they're young and still prefer pure performance to impress the opposite sex, 2) they can't afford a fully loaded MB yet. Actually in US the trend is shifting from MB to Lexus but the rest of the world hasn't followed yet. But the reality is at least where I'm at right now, with a MB you can get better parking spaces and services reserved for the upper class. In fact, I've been in situations where we got a Lexus LS, 325i, and a C320 fighting for the same spot but they gave it to the MB. So they do "force" me to take out the heavy ass S class for certain places just to make it on time. Can't fight the power of hype and image...

Ouch, Veda. :-P Mercedes-Benz sure makes some nice cars, but to call BMW a "stepping stone"...I'm not so sure about that. ;-) Many people will get furious hearing this...and lately, Mercedes-Benz hasn't been producing as high-quality vehicles as before, though they're getting better and I think the worst is over.

Aston, why do pretty much all Chinese want to own a Mercedes? When you see a Chinese driving a Chinese brand car, then he is the exclusive one as MB has been in their blood for so long. A Chinese who doesn't own a MB Is a disgrace to his community... BMW has been a stepping stone to the true goal of owning a MB. That's just hard facts...

JS, Americans are not so much prejudiced against Chinese products as we are against Chinese products with Chinese names. Without Chinese products, every Wal-Mart SuperCenter would look like an empty barn. Have Wal-Mart sell the cars under the name Popular Mechanics or GE and they do land office business.

Bonquisha, Pininfarina stylings are either hit or miss and apparently the ones that they release in US just don't do it. The perfect example of their success story is the Ssangyong Rexton which many would drive simply because of the unusual style. The car itself is almost complete crap though, I know I own 2...

We all have prejudices against chinese products: cheap but very poor quality. Time will tell us whether we´re right or not. Anyway, I think I´d spend a bit more and buy something more... "glamourous" than a Chery.

If they can bring cars with interesting designs from Pininfarina or some other established designers, maybe they'll get the sales here in US. Make it attractive enough and cheap, you got 2 out of 4 selling points nailed. As for the cost advantage, yes it may not be as great as some may thought. The perfect example would be the cheapo Chinese motorcycles that are very cheap to buy but a nightmare on the service side.

by the time chinese cars arrive in the US any cost advantage will have evaporated and the makers will be competing with the established Japanese and Korean makers with no unique selling points. Good LUck
