Plane crew uses nav system in Land Rover to guide journey

On April 6th, a flight crew used the satellite navigation system in a Land Rover LR3 aboard the plane to navigate from Nice to Corsica. The stunt was part of a new marketing campaign that launches in the U.S. today. Called “Designed for the Extraordinary,” the campaign attempts to showcase the rugged features of Land Rover models in a world of pavement-oriented SUVs. The plane used was a C-130 Hercules cargo carrier. Image after the jump…

What a silly marketing campaign… Any car can have GPS, not just SUVs.

That photo looks like something straight out of Photoshop…

From the commercial it appeared that the car might have altitute and attitude gauges as well …but don’t quote me on that. That seems the only thing practical to fly the c-130. GPS alone will not get the plane there safely.

I don’t think that’s the point they’re trying to make, #1.

GPS is line of sight. It doesn’t work indoors, and unless the antenna can “see” the Sats through the windows, it won’t work on a plane either. I have a hand-held Garmin, and I’ve tried it on a plane. You have to put it up against the window and hold it there. Sitting in a window seat, it will lose tracking even on the tray table.

Lampie, GPS can work indoors is the anteana is strong enough to pick up the 3 satelittes, and thus the position the device.

That said, I think this campaign looks pretty good – but I am glad someone pointed me in the direction of ‘ the rest of the story’, as they say.

I found the video explaining the whole concept here:
