Pontiac downplays RWD rumors

06/08/2006, 4:41 PM

By admin

A Pontiac spokesman downplayed recent media reports suggesting Pontiac will switch to a rear-wheel-drive-only lineup over the next few years. The unidentified spokesperson told Ward’s Auto Pontiac is looking to add some rear-wheel-drive vehicles to its lineup, but the division has no specific plans to abandon front-wheel-drive. In late May, Automotive News said GM was considering reviving Pontiac’s role as GM’s performance leader with a lineup of exclusively rear-wheel-drive cars. Later, Forbes columnist Jerry Flint criticized the idea, saying a RWD lineup would not save Pontiac.

what exactly is so bad about front wheel drive? I mean, the car goes wherever you point it. Thats all that needs to happen!

I don’t think RWD will save this company. I think making cars with the same emotional appeal as the Pontiac Solstice will.

Toy Yoda when I look at the Solstice I see a bloated product that is bigger, less wieldy and precise, heavier and less nimble than it should have been. I don’t think the initial strong demand is sustainable. The Fiero had strong initial demand but the MR2 was always so much better. The miata is a better more balanced, more honed and more sophisticated sporting machine.

I agree with Toy Yoda. Sure, it might be technically worse than the Miata, but Mazda’s been at it for a long time. I think the Solstice is definitely a good start, and I rather like the design. I remember not being able to blieve it was a pontiac.

Give us a better looking ‘goat that doesn’t look like a warmed over Grand Am, bring back a Busch Series contender Grand Prix that will get those who think the Monte Carlo is sexy to go a flutter/flutter, and come out with a Holden wagon and maybe a rwd camino…

That’d be sweet.

Front license plate brackets are shipped in the cars that are destined to be delivered to States and Countries that require it. It is then installed by the Dealer at delivery. All other destinations do not get the part.

As much as I hate Pontiac I do like the solstice. That said I would still go by a Boxster instead

Yeh, that makes a lot of sense. At $45 large for a base Boxster and $54 large for a Boxster S, and with the Solstice basing at $20,490, I can see your rational.

Sure the solstice is cheaper, but if I bought the solstice I would be sad I didnt get the Boxster.

Car buying is not rational, if it were we would all buy the cheapest reliable car with the best gas mileage.

You buy what you can afford because you want it. If I could afford the 911 I would be driving that instead.

The point is the two vehicles aren’t even in the same market, given their respective price points. Someone who shops a Solstice can’t afford a Boxster. One would cross shop a Boxster with a Vette.
