Originally launched in Canada for the 2005 model year, Pontiac introduced the G5 to the United States two years later as a 2007 model, shortening its Canadian name of G5 Pursuit to G5 for the US. Offered as both a coupe and Sedan in Canada, the G5 is only offered as a coupe in the US. The G5 is built upon GM's Delta platform, sharing that platform and major components with other General Motors stable mates, including the Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Saturn ION and the Saturn Astra. Using Pontiac's signature grill, the G5 follows the new Pontiac styling theme set by its larger sibling, the G6.
For 2008, buyers have the option of two trim levels - a base model and the G5 GT. Both trim levels are available with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Offered only in a front engine, front wheel drive layout, the G5 is powered by a choice of two engines - an Ecotec 2.2 liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder with 148 horsepower, or an Ecotec 2.4 liter variable valve timing DOHC 4-cylinder with 171 horsepower. The base model G5 Coupe includes the smaller 2.2 liter engine, while the sportier G5 GT comes standard with the 2.4 liter engine.
Designed for up to five occupants, the G5 comes standard with multiple safety features, including a tire pressure monitoring system, daytime running lights, dual-stage front air bags, driver and right-front passenger air bags, and head curtain side air bags. All-speed traction control is optional on both trim levels, with GM's stability enhancement system, StabiliTrak, available as an option on the G5 GT. Antilock brakes are available as an option on the base G5 Coupe and are included standard on the G5 GT.
In addition to the available safety features, the G5 has a broad range of options available, including GM's Onstar auto safety and security system which provides fuel station location, hands-free calling, concierge services, turn-by-turn navigation and vehicle diagnostics. XM Radio capability is standard, with a Pioneer premium audio system (including a subwoofer) available as an option. iPod integration is optional on both trim levels.
