Spied Again: 2010 Pontiac G6 convertible with no camo

09/30/2008, 5:00 PM

By Drew Johnson

Our spies today caught GM putting the refreshed G6 GT hardtop convertible through some final testing in Southern Michigan. Our photographers also recently managed to snap images of the updated Pontiac G6 sedan. Both cars will either be launched for the 2009 or 2010 model year.

Pontiac’s G6 has proven to be a strong seller for GM, so the refresh should ensure continued success for the next few years. The freshening includes a new front fascia and air-intakes, as well as a slightly tweaked rear. The interior appears to be unchanged.

Although we’re nearing the end of the year, we haven’t been able to confirm if this is a 2009 model year update, or a 2010 facelift — but we’ll get back to you with additional details as they come in.

Pontiac has already released information on the 2009 G6 and so far there has been no mention of styling modifications. The biggest change for 2009 models arriving in showrooms soon will be the six-speed automatic/four cylinder combination already seen in the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ Spring Edition. Stay tuned.

I wonder if anyone will notice. I actually prefer the current cars simpler facia treatment.

I think this looks like a step backwards. The front end is now much too busy, with the 3 air intakes on the lower fascia and the added character line. It looks like the Grand Am. I too much preferred the rounded simpler look of the current G6. The current one looks a lot more like the Amazing G6 concept car from 2003, which I still think is one of the most gorgeous sedan designs in the last decade (note: I repeat I’m talking about the Concept car!). I find the look of the current car very appealing, and this refresh takes that all away.

Made a newer model that is…exactly the same as the “older” model..

Wow. I always thought Pontiac was at the very worst gender neutral. Instead of reaching an OnStar operator this thing should have a direct line to FTD.

Wow. I didn’t know they made a hard top convertible version of the 1994 Grand Am. Pontiac is looking just as confused as ever.
Let’s see.

1. How about getting rid of all the plastic cladding garbage.
2. Now we’ll use a great rear wheel drive car from Australia and use that to create a rear wheel drive sports division and all the names will be alphanumeric to look more worldly and BMW like because that’s our goal.
3. No! Let’s have a front wheel drive crossover and call it Torrent. That says sporty! There’s alpha in the name. Numeric? Uhhh. Look! Shiny! Keys!
4. What we really need is an updated Vibe so we have a newer front drive Toyota in the lineup.
5. Now that we’ve truly gone schizophrenic, let’s make our new sporty, crossover, rear-wheel only, front drivers look like the ones we made 15 years ago!

This is truly where Bob Lutz has dropped the Product Czar ball. Don;t get me wrong. He’s a great car guy and the product that GM is putting out now is far superior to the garbage they were pushing on us, but Pontiac looks like the brand standing in the corner banging its head on the wall trying to silence the voices.

Oh yeah.
6. Throw in a rebadged Cobalt that looks just like the Cavalier it replaces and is on it’s last legs. And we’ll go back to the alpha AND numeric naming scheme.
7. We’ve got Australian, Japanese, and American cars in the brand, we’ll make it truly international and add in a cobbled together, rebadged little Korean job too! But hey, this time we’ll carry over the alphanumeric thing to two cars in a row!

Can’t STOP VOICES!!!!!!

8. Did I forget the little roadster? It’s rear wheel drive! The naming thing? Look…Shiny! Keys!!!

Surely you can’t be serious. I am serious and don’t call me Shirley.

GM, I’m sorry but the last time I checked, the world wasn’t in demand for ANOTHER convertible… nor do I see it as a viable product due to the downturn in the US economy where convertibles and roadsters are viewed as luxury items.

Maybe GM sees something I don’t, but the last time I heard, GM’s revenue was quite heavily in the red and one extra product like this won’t help turn a profit… so I’m to the point where I really don’t care if they keep complaining about how they aren’t making money and nobody wants their products.

How about this… instead of talking up the cars you’re going to produce in late 2010 (which is still two years away), try moving some of them up to production little quicker?

quiksilver180 is so quick to dismiss GM for building the G6 convertible which btw is selling very briskly yet he forgets that Toyota failed miserably with the Solara POS (when was the last time you saw one of those that wasn’t in the junkyard?) or that Honda didn’t even bother bringing out an Accord coupe because they knew damn well that their pos wouldn’t be nearly as reliable or dependable as a Pontiac.

Of course this dude is fake. He’s obviously the same kid that was posting as “tripleonefive”, except this time he’s all for GM instead of Honda. GM fans, like me, are never this biased. We’re more likely to give credit where it’s due, unlike most Japanese import fans. I actually think the Accord coupe is kinda cool-looking, except for the sedan. It’s uglier than the G6.

BTW, I’ve always thought of the G6 as being very ugly. I’d rather drive an Aztek.

DadzBoyz, you forgot the Pontiac G3 Aveo and the G8 ST Ute. Yep, this brand is definitely confused. And you need to add KOREAN to point #7. That makes it “Australian, Japanese, American and Korean cars in the brand.” The brand should be renamed “GeoPontiac.”

just when you think pontiac is turning the corner, boom, gm realizes pontiac can still sell in volume and go back to making them a chevy clone division ….what a shame. i agree that this car is going backward with the refresh and that the g6 concept car should have been given the green light….that was an incredible car that would have been a big seller……yippee, the 80’s are back for pontiac….
