Pontiac G8 production to cease this year with no Pontiac models to survive beyond 2010

04/27/2009, 9:51 AM

By Drew Johnson

General Motors officially announced on Monday its Pontiac brand will be phased out by the end of 2010, but the marque’s brightest star – the G8 – won’t even make it that far. GM CEO Fritz Henderson announced earlier today the G8 sedan will be phased out by the end of this year.

According to Henderson, Pontiac’s relationship with Holden – GM’s Australian subsidiary and maker of the G8 – will end by the end of 2009. Henderson said production of the Pontiac G8 will wind down by the end of the year, with the automaker prepared to offer heavy incentives to get the performance sedan off dealer lots. News AU estimates the end of the Pontiac G8 will cost Holden more than $750 million in lost revenue.

Additionally, Henderson said GM has no plans to move any Pontiac models to other brands. That means the Pontiac Solstice will ride off into the sunset shortly after the G8, with the Vibe likely to be the last model standing in the Pontiac lineup. The Vibe is made at a joint-venture plant with Toyota, with the five-door wagon set to be produced through 2010. The Pontiac G3 — essentially a rebadged version of the Chevy Aveo — and the G6, a platform mate of the Chevy Malibu, will also be discontinued.

Sad, I’ve never been a Pontiac fan, but their models have come close to interesting me. I briefly looked at both the G6 and the G8 when they came out, but when it came down to it there was always a better car on the market. At that time a Volvo won out.

The G8 was cool, but the styling felt over the top and cheap. There a BMW 3-series won out.

They’ll be selling (or trying to) G8s for at least two more years. The dealership I went to recently must have had over 50 of them on their lot. You hardly ever see one on the road which is two bad as I agree, it is Pontiac’s best car.

The rest of their lineup is basically crap and has been for ages. They should have differentiated themselves better rather than stick that old-looking split grille front end on everything and expect it to sell. I don’t think they ever recovered from 10 years ago when they had the horrid grey plastic side moldings on their vehicles and the cheap dashboards with more horrid grey plastic buttons.

Too bad the G8 couldn’t get the Chevy front end treatment they use in foreign countries and be relabeled a Bel Air/Caprice SS or something

Ford does not have any RWD in its future plans. V6 was excellent in G8 and V8 was exceptional, but lets face the reality: except extremely expensive cars there is no room for RWD models in today economy. When price of oil will go up, those cars can not be sold. If anyone wants to remind me of BMW and Benz: in Europe most of those cars sold with 4 cylinder diesel and in US they are expensive enough to be marketed to people who don’t care about fuel and maintenance cost. All Audi started life as FWD.

Johnny, G8 V8 does not come with manual and you probably will not find manual V6 either. On top, it is Holden so except for motor, parts will be an issue and may cost a lot.

I’ll miss Pontiac and I’m glad I got my G8 GXP when I did. RWD is king I don’t care what anyone says and you don’t necessarily need a V8 to drive the rear wheels V6’s work just fine and who knows a turbo 4 could do equally as well. For all of you on the MPG kick lets remember AWD cars usuallu have worse MPG numbers that FWD or RWD! Good Pontiac.

Well if you want to get a deal on a G8 right now, now is the time! I know someone who just got a new loaded GT version w/ 19 inch wheels for right under 30 out the door. I only wish the non-GXP V8 version could have been offered with a stick. They’re still darn fast and can easily hang with mustang GTs.

I don’t know what people are meaning when they say they were short on options. They only came one way really if you got the GT version which is really the only option I could ever see. I did always find it odd that they have this huge nav-looking center screen without an actual nav. I read it is not offered though because of regulation, the screen is simply too low.

I’m revolted by today’s announcements. How is it that we get to have two luxury brands in one of the worst recessions/depressions in recent history but can’t keep an enthusiast/sporty oriented brand around? Buick would have been the logical choice to get the axe. It should have been merged with Cadillac. Similarly, some of the Saturn products could have been merged into the Pontiac fold. People who buy Saturns could have conceivably bought a Pontiac and vice versa but Saturn and Pontiac customers are NOT Buick and Chevrolet customers. GM may have committed the greatest blunder in its history. The G8 was a fantastic car. People were just finding out about it now. Sales were taking off. Now it gets killed along with the brand. The G8 was in many ways a starting point for the brand to rejuvenate itself. They should have stuck with it.

RIP Pontiac

What LLN reported is that PONTIAC is severing ties with Holden. In other words the G8 will no longer be made by Holden for Pontiac and Holden loses that income.

Will Holden produce any other vehicles for GM? Who knows. But I doubt it since Holden is known for making larger V8 vehicles and those are going away over the next 5 years, even in Austrailia. Holden is working like mad to bring in smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles to their country and are working with Opel and GM-Daewoo to do so.

Even BMW is looking to put 4 cylinders in their vehicles here.

I though if any brand in GM were to go first it would have been Buick and not even olds. I will say this My father had several Pontiac s and really none of them were really special . They were ok and somewhat decent transportation but nothing to write home about. My favorite car he owned was a Honda Accord believe it or not.. But I know this may infuriate PontiacNick but I will tell you nick GM, Ford, and Chrysler are all 3 guilty of one thing. Rebadging way too much. If it were up to me it would be Just Ford and Lincoln, Dodge and Chyrsler, and Chevy and Cadillac for GM this way these company cut out all the Rebadging non-sense (Be more like Toyota) and focus their Money on R&D but I believe even if that were done the Execs would pocket all the loose change!

GM had better start figuring out how to make small and midsize rear drive cars again– and fast.

This is pretty sad–the G8 really is a nice car. This is just a sign of things to come. GM probably can’t manage too many high volume makes right now. Caddy and Buick should thrive, because their numbers are comparatively lower, and there remains a market for both (even if you have to go to China to find Buick’s). Looks like the Chevy brand will be the high-volume GM offering, and why not put the rest of the eggs in the basket of the company that sells a lot of trucks and SUVs.

Holden’s smarting, I’m sure with a loss of $750M. Too bad the G8 couldn’t be badged as a Chevy, but I guess the costs of re-badging a Holden is more than GM has let on; probably want to ditch the chassis for U.S. consumption.

The reason GM is keeping Buikc and not Pontiac is because of 3 things:
1. CAFE-all RWD models will kill the average MPG of GM cars
2. Reliability-Buick is at Lexus level in reliabilty while Pontiac is below Chevy.
3. Pontiac actually has a more negative reputation than Buick.

If GM gets its act together and gives Buick a full, solid line-up than this will work better than keeping Pontiac and axeing Buick. Pontiac is the more damaged brand, with GM accelerating the damage with those idiotic ‘G’ names.

The Solstice/Sky should become the Buick Bengal (if I were in charge).
The G8 would become the Impala or Caprice or Buick Grand National.
The Vibe would be driven off a cliff.

But facing the facts Pontiac simply isnt/wasn’t fulfilling its place which was sporty brand, to bring in the Real car drivers and the young people. The Vibe was forgettable, The G6 lost ground so fast it was insane and the solstice, though a cool car was crap when pit against the much better lookin Sky. someone above said it best, while here in the US Buick is for the old people and even so you still almost NEVER see them, abroad the Buick name moves like crazy, it is a better money maker for GM. as for Gm keeping GMC im still tilting my head in stpid daze as to WHY? every GMC model could easily just be sold as a chevy. GMC is simply chevy trucks with a more refined interior and a cooler grill(imo) Couldnt Chevy simple sell those trucks with a “GMC” package of some sort and achieve the same thing without havin an entire brand for it? All in all i think im More sad to see the soltice/ sky go than the G8. there’s alot of cars out there to do battle with the the likes of the G8 but the miata fighting sky/soltice was such a hit, there arent too many small sporty roadsters out there in that segment, especially with the mr2 death and the soon to be dead s2000 . the pocket roadster is gonna be a completely unfilled market

Judging by the posts here, I think a good portion of them have been made without reading any of the others. But to answer some of your questions AGAIN…

Buick sells well in China. Say what you want about the country, but if they are giving you money that doesnt have to be paid back for a product (I’m talking to you, US Treasury) you really dont care where it comes from when you’re struggling to stay afloat.

The G8 was a “neat car” but as someone who seriously considered buying one three months ago, it like the short lived GTO, was still too Australian, and porly ported over. Things as simple as a huge radio display but no navigation, a stick only available in the 40K GXP version when the original and Vaxhaul version came with it standard, and the overall cheapness of the interior were turn offs. Finally add in that they refuse to do much more than take off the initial 3k rebate at just about every dealer I went to over the last 3 months equals piss poor sales, even for what was sadly the best Pontiac in the last 20 years. I agree that a port as a Grand National/Impalla SS would be a good idea, but obviously it wasn’t making enough sales to warrant the trouble.

The Solstice was a cool car, but if you have ever been in one, you know the interior was crap too. It just couldnt shake that Pontiac cheapness. Great track car or not, being first on race day doesn’t always equate to sales on the street.

GMC, despite being the blatant example of GM rebadging, sells the hell out of those “rebadged Chevy Trucks”

These decisions may not make much sense to a lot of us, but I think it’s safe to say we are all looking at this with a Car Lover’s bias, not with a bean counter and (unfortunately) D.C. Lawyer’s perspective, AKA the people running GM. These guys just want crap that ultimately lines their pockets and fits their adgendas, not cars people actually want.

I have a Grand Prix with a supercharger on it, amazing car, handles amazing, and stupid fast, and it has 4 doors. The G8 would so be my next car. Although I thought I did see a report that they are contemplating putting a chevy badge on it and using it as a police vehicle? anyone else seen that, that would be pretty crazy to see one of those in your rearview mirror lights blazing. In my opinion restructuring should be like this:
Pontiac – performance/sport division, G8 and a rebadged camaro as a firebird, or GTO possibly?
Saturn – see you later, but rebadge the Saturan Astra hatch back, Keep the Sky and move over to Pontiac performance instead of the round solstice
GMC – strictly trucks, they look better than the chevy’s
Chevy – all cars, Move Pontiac vibe over here, maybe some smaller subcompact SUV’s, no trucks
Buick – keep them because of the reliability and revenue from China
Cadillac – keep doing what they’re doing
then for the love of god do not lose Opel in Europe, or Holden in Australia
Saab – gone
Does Daewoo in China really contribute all that much?

But why kill the G8?? this makes absolutely no sense what so ever, they are a certifiable BMW killer, and without the pretentious BMW badge on the hood. Stupid.
