Pontiac G8 ST: officially cancelled

01/06/2009, 12:58 PM

By Nick Aziz

In a broadcast to dealers Tuesday morning, General Motors officially announced its G8 ST has been cancelled. The news comes less than a month after Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC, publicly stated the program was under review.

The low-volume two-door pickup model had projected U.S. sales of just 5,000 units a year, making the business case difficult to justify. On the surface, turning the Holden Ute into a G8 ST seems like a pretty simple case of badge-engineering, but when you take the left-hand-drive retooling and other U.S.-specific modifications into account, it’s easy to see why it was a hard sell for GM management given current economic conditions.

The sport truck was to be powered by the same 6.0-liter V8 used in the G8 GT sedan. The motor puts out 361 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque. Combined with a six-speed automatic it promised a zero to 60 mph time of 5.4 seconds.

Like the Ute, the ST would seat only two occupants. Behind the seats a large interior cargo area was expected to offer more than 8.5 cubic feet (245 liters) of storage space. A 73.9-inch cargo bed promised 42.7 cubic feet of space and a payload capacity of more than 1,074 pounds, plus the ability to tow a 3,500-pound trailer.

The termination of the G8 ST dashes hopes for a modern-day El Camino indefinitely, though it’s clear such a vehicle would only appeal to a very small demographic. It’s possible GMC’s Denali XT — also based on the Holden Ute — could one day see production, but at the moment there’s nothing to indicate that will ever happen.

Nice looking car, but I agree, not much need for one. Maybe one day they will make it, that is if GM is still around.

Thank goodness! That car was hideous. The G8 and the G8 couple are great muscle cars and are constructed as such. This thing was just…I don’t know. The side shots make it look like a triangle. But nonetheless, thank you Pontiac for killing this car.

This wasn’t the car that needed to make it here, anyway.

We need the a G8 wagon instead. That’d sell better AND fit in better with Pontiac’s brand statement than a Pontiac coupe-pickup sold next to two GMC pickups.

Oh, and we need the Holden Caprice to replace the current Lucerne.

The idea of a car based truck still has merit, but not like this. Something in the spirit of the old Dodge Rampage or Rabbit pickup would appeal to a far broader audience. 1115 is probably right in that most of the people drooling over the G8 ST probably couldn’t afford the gas or insurance never mind the car itself.

Please tell me they are still making a coupe. Seriously, these things are what put GM where it is now. Maybe this wouldn’t sell well, but the word of mouth alone and the knowledge of GM making these cars gives them a reputation to build a future on, not G6’s or G3’s. You make these cars to build the brand for the long term, not the short term they are obsessed with.

Image builders don’t come from super cars like the Ford GT, or specialty cars like the Plymouth Prowler, Chevrolet SSR or this Pontiac. They come from the main line. That’s what they need to focus on.

I would have loved to see increased development in a vehicle like the Pontiac Grand Prix. I could even point out the problems with it; a chassis that would is now 26 years old, front wheel drive and only a… four speed… automatic… available. Once you got in one, the interior screamed “try harder!!!” I’m not saying they would have sold more with a rear wheel drive Grand Prix, but the outreach would be huge to both current owners and prospective buyers unlike this.

Better yet, they should have kept cars like the Grand Am, which just needed some refining. I’d actually still consider them sporty little cars, only problems were the interior, minor exterior parts and a new platform (the N-body when cancelled was 22 years old)

But hey, they were content with bringing the price down lower and lower to try to “attract” more buyers. That obviously failed.

The idea of a pickup car was repulsive any way. The should have done a “G8/Monaro Coupe” again as GTO. Not likely it would happen though the way things are looking for the broke General.

Those who somehow claim the ute is ‘ugly’ have obviously never seen one in person.

You won’t see any more Monaro-ish coupes anyway, the Aussies don’t buy ‘em.

I have a feeling that Pontiac’s future “sporty niche” will be more of an entry premium position in B-P-G made up of small hatchback models. If this means that Pontiac will be selling the next gen Corsa/Astra hatchbacks, then it won’t be so bad. I would prefer to see Pontiac turned into a RWD affordable performance “niche” brand, but I seriously doubt that will happen anytime soon, if ever. If anyone is still hanging on to hope that it will happen based on GM’s recent comments about a sporty niche future for Pontiac, please keep in mind that the press release for the upcoming Aveo based G3 hatchback stated that the car was a sporty, fun to drive addition to Pontiac’s lineup. It seems that GM has a completely different mindset as to what “sporty” and “fun to drive” means than the rest of the general public. GM’s version of “sporty” seems to revolve around putting a twin-nostril grille on everything and proclaiming it is sporty. It’s amazing how that twin-nostril grille alone can transform an otherwise mundane vehicle into a sexy driving machine. How impressive and magical is that?…

As far as the cancellation of this particular vehicle for the U.S.: I feel bad for those who planned on buying one and are truly disappointed, but I can’t say that I am one of them. I wasn’t particularly enthused to see that GM planned on including it in Pontiac’s lineup. Chevrolet was the proper home for it.

I have been a loyal GM owner for over 40 years, and it makes me sad to have to go to Japan and take more dollors out of the US. I guess I will be looking into import from downunder to get a UTE, I’m guna die with a new ELCAMINO one way or another. Another lost GM suporter.

I think the main mistake GM made was only offering the high-end SS Ute to you guys to what is a very limited market even without a recession. Here in OZ the Holden Ute is offered in a cheap bare-bones version with steel wheels, base V6 motor, canvas tarp for the rear and basic interior & is hugely popular with farmers & tradespeople alike as a cheap light-truck with the power & handling of a sedan. It’s only several more models up the line that we reach the expensive and relatively low-volume high performance SS Ute. And why is t we always have to fit an ugly grill & front end to our US export vehiclesto attempt to revive the 1960 twin-snorkel Pontiac look; Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, etc don’t feel the need to uglify their cars for the US market!

At least I think GM got it right with their plans to sell the US police forces the long wheelbase version of the Commodore, the Holden Statesman, as the Chevy Caprice police interceptor. Over here it’s a fully equipped and expensive limmo and fairly low volume (& is shipped also to the middle east in similar trim & low volumes), but the smart move was to strip out the plush interior & all the luxury extras & ship it to the US as a big, powerfull but basic-trim RWD police car; apparantly they’re lokking at a possible 40,000+ units a year just to police forces alone!

And for you guys who say the Ute looks ugly in the photos; I agree with you! You really need to see one in the flesh, & they look much better in daylight & painted in bright colours (sorry, colors); where I live in Sydney’s sothern beaches it semms every third car on the roads is a Ute (usually with a dog & a surfboard in the back)!
