Pontiac’s G8 line-up may just grow to include a high-performance coupe which bears the GXP go-fast moniker shared with the GXP sedan. This would include much of the same hardware, including the 402-horsepower Corvette-sourced V8 and six-speed manual transmission, and give Pontiac the firepower to compete with the Ford Mustang GT500KR and Dodge Challenger SRT8. GM is reported to be having an internal conflict on whether or not to build a G8 coupe, which would be based on the recent Holden Coupe 60 concept car shown off at Australia’s Melbourne auto show earlier this year.
If it gets the green light for production, the coupe would be available for sale within three years, according to Inside Line. Main reasons for not building a G8 coupe include the looming stiff CAFE standards, stringent emissions limits and ever increasing gas costs. A GM insider speaking to Inside Line indicated there is less than a 50 percent chance of the two-door G8 seeing the light of day. “The G8 Coupe is not dead,” he said. “This is an uphill battle. It shouldn’t be. But it is.”
A GT version of the coupe mechanically similar to the G8 GT sedan would also be likely.

Same thing different name.
I don’t think GM would do well with a Camaro twin b/c that’s exactly what a G8 Coupe would be… and it certainly wouldn’t help their CAFE rating either.

I would only like to see it because it means there would be another Pontiac model to keep the brand alive. That said, this will never see the light of day.

This really should be a no brainer, but stupid CAFE is going to kill this car. It would sell, and in good numbers. Something the American car companies desperately need, especially Pontiac. This car would also be great for reinforcing the “sporty/performance” image pontiac has always tried to create, but has never quite acheived.

I don’t understand what the hell Pontiac is debating about they need exactly this! A performance coupe to compete against Ford and Dodge. If they are worried about CAFE Standards then why did they bring over the Holden UTE’s? Hmm let’s see who here would rather have this or the Pontiac G8 ST????
Whether they named it the GTO or Pontaic G8 Coupe, I wouldn’t care. Bring it and I will buy it.

Great looking car…but I don’t see the point. GM killed the pony cars because they were not selling in any numbers. Insurance has not gotten any less expensive and we all know what gas prices are going to do…so why bother. Just produce great volume cars.

I am with Need4SSpeed…the Holden UTEs are a complete waste of time and money, the SSR should have taught GM that a long time ago. A go fast small pickup sucks. The GTO (last gen) sold pretty good, but not as good as it could because it kinda looked like a Cavalier. This G8 coupe does not have this problem. Pontiac, build this coupe, loaded to the tee, make it a special limited numbers halo car. CAFE restrictions? I remember when GM had Geo and the Metro with a 3 cylinder egine that got like 50mpg. Just bring that back. It does not have to be pretty, heck SMART is having a hard time keeping up with demands…just build some $10k low performance high mpg city cars and CAFE is solved.
IF they build this, I will buy it…finally something to compete with the M3 coupe without all the unnecessary electro crap and a reasonable price.

I know GM is concern about the new CAFE standards. However, the key to success of a car company is to build cars that people want to buy. The clients in the market for this sort of cars don’t care about fuel efficiency or how much a gallon will cost. All they want is performance and the joy of driving. GM should stop thinking like an accounting firm and act like an automobile manufacturer that it is. The GTO was a flop because it didn’t have the body to go with the muscles. This iteration, however, looks like a dead ringer. Build it, and they will come.

Thanks Pontiac, if this means that the Holden Monaro (and HSV GTO, Monaro Convertible) is coming back!
V2, that was the old GTO/Monaro. The new G8 that it is based on is better built (compared to the old one), and is much cheaper in the US than it is in Australia. And yea, you’re right, they do depreciate like no tomorrow.

I would get one and make a modern Chevelle out of it add a Holden front clip, billet grill insert with some SS logos and a painted white roof with matching racing stripes on a blue body.
The biggest problem from concept to production is the lazy engineers would put a freakin B pillar on it. Don’t give me that crap about roll over safety when every other car these days has a GLASS ROOF!
Because everyone knows glass is the best medium to use in case of roll over crashes. If the G6 hardtop convertible can exist without a B pillar this car damn well better not have a B pillar.
When will auto designers get it, a coupe should have the following features to be a hit.
1. Low aggressive raked stance.
2. Round headlights with simple grill and small logos.
3. 2+2 seating.
4. 16 -18 inch wheels I’m sick of Huge Wagon Wheels.
5. dual exhaust always, even on the smaller engines
6. RWD or AWD
7. NO STINKIN B-PILLARS.

BTW, JJT,
The G8 is the real deal, not the Accord, at least from a performance stand point. The G8 Coupe will thump the Accord coupe across the board as while.
Also there is a kind of ugliness about seeing a FWD car that tries to pass itself off as a performance, even if by looks alone.

To Build or Not to Build::
To Build::
1. G8 supposedly goes up against BMW so it needs a coupe.
2. If it stays looking like concept a pure seller.
3. Not everybody would be able to afford the Camaro’s mark-up price when it comes out so this is the alternative to that scenario.
Not to Build::
1. The GTO failed so what makes you think this would sell since it almost looks like a refresh of a g8.
2. Gas prices and insurance prices is high so unless you rich many will pass this up.
3. CAFE standards.
4. Knowing GM they will make this car as plain as looking at blank paper

IF GM could bring this over in limited #’s just as I take it they are going to be in limited #’s with the G8 ST then I don’t think that CAFE would be as much of a problem. Just like Andrewthecarguy and I were saying, I think what GM really needs to re-think is bringing the Holden Ute’s over and bringing this over instead.

If they’d be willing to make Pontiac the niche brand they were talking about then this might make sense. For instance, they talked about Pontiac going all RWD and being performance oriented. That was until this CAFE thing came up. But, seems like a ****ty excuse. Throw in the D.I. six, the turbo ecotec.

Well V-2 is right about one thing, every country has it’s share of red-necks, other then that he is clueless.
It’s amazing how the American car company articles on LLN always have the most comments. Usually negative from the same people everytime whom obviously not onlky hate domestics regardless of what car it is, also hate America in every possible way. Unions may not always be a good thing but for the most part they are still needed in some insudtries. For you pro-European car people, all car plants in Germany are unionized and yes, they strike just like the U.S. If you dislike domestics then don’t keep commenting the same **** every single article. Fill in the empty spaces on Toyota or Honda articles on here and how those cars are the second coming of Christ to people like Triplefagboy whom is probably under 21 and lives with his Mom in a trailer park. Or Deanster something or another whom lives in Canada where if not for America would get around on Polaris ATV’s and dog sleds since last time I checked there were no car companies based there. Just the factories of foriegn car companies. LaCarLover, what are you, a greenie from France? LaCar was a French piece of **** built by Renault in the 80’s. Need more oil for GM, your know different, just on the opposite side. Though I’m as much a patriot as any other good America, your bias on the opposite side is over the top. If you trulty support America then you support all domestic companies, not just one. That “my Chevy is better then your Ford” is in the past.
