2009 Porsche 911 Turbo spied again

10/16/2008, 1:15 PM

By Drew Johnson

Porsche is slowly updating its entire 911 line, and the ultra-powerful 911 Turbo is no exception. Porsche will introduce the Turbo’s new look in the near future — probably at the Detroit auto show in January. Until then, we’ve got some fantastic spy shots showing the vehicle with next to no camouflage — and look at those rotors!

As shown by these latest photos, the car has all-new LED taillights, a deeper front air dam, restyled fog lights, and updated LED daytime running lights.

After being bested by the Nissan GT-R, Porsche also has updates in store for the powertrain. The Turbo will get a 15-25 hp bump via a new direct-injection system. A few other upgraded internals will also be in store.

The Turbo Convertible is receiving a similar facelift, as evidenced by recent spy photos. We expect both models to debut at the same time.

So, are those rotors red hot?

Either those rotors are glowing from heat or you can now choose your ceramic brakes in much the same way as your bathroom fixtures.

Of course they are red hot! Please LLN, tell me you didnt think that the rotors are colored!

Jam on the brakes and all cars rotors will glow red like that. I can get a Smart car’s rotors to glow red – big deal.

New look? It looks the same as the old one. Again.

Yeah breaks get red when there hot…but!…they shouldnt be this hot around the ring, the ring is high speed enought they should be cooling enough…I would say there doing break testing or there having a cooling issue.

They will not show the car in Detroit. Porsche no longer rents space at the North American International Auto Show,

It’s because they’re carbon ceramics. I have yet to see regular brakes glow red. It’s probably no issue at all. The PCCB is one of the best out there and so good that you can slap those brakes on a race car and it’ll work just as well. The Nurburgring is at least 10 miles long and many laps around the Ring will certainly get your brakes wet and dirty. In this case, hot as hell.

brocky – I guess you haven’t been to the track or autocross then. I have, and cast iron rotors glow red all the time. Carbon ceramic does glow brighter, but cast iron glows nicely too.

What about PDK, God’s plaything LLN? Surely they’ll have PDK on the Turbo, GT3 & GT2?

i doubt the PDK can handle the power of the Turbo… just like VW was scared to push the limits of their first gen DSG.

All brakes glow red like that. Carbon ceramics seem to do it alot easier.
But i like the new 911s. they look more refined to me.

Brocky is correct… Those are Ceramic Composite brakes (notice they yellow calliper) and they’re glowing due to how much abuse they’re taking around the ring.. Not because they’re painted. You can tell this guy is going pretty fast but that means nothing for these brakes. They come straight out of the LMP2 RS Spyder. Hence it is an almost nine thousand dollar option. As for PDK, Porsche designed and developed it in the 1980’s for motorsport. So it too can take some abuse.

Hey, Fromes, the GT-R spec V will be faster then this blah blah…

Had to.

Glowing rotors sure looks cool. It’s like the afterburner from an F-15.

This car is looking pretty hot. At first, I didn’t really like the back end, but now I do.

I’d never get to the Nurburgring (or any other track for that matter) to race around if I got a car like this, but since I brought it up, there are many good comparisons between the GT-R and the 911 Turbo to consider other than speed. The Turbo is just sexy, while the GT-R is sort of sexy. The Turbo is probably much more raw, which I love, but I’d feel safer having my wife drive my GT-R than this Turbo. One thing I do like about the GT-R is that I can fit my wife and kids in it, and in this car, I can only fit my wife or one kid. However, either one wouldn’t really be a family car to me, since if I did spend the money for it, my wife would probably end up with it after the divorce settlement.

So with that said, I’d take the Audi R8.

I’m being such a jerk right now. But I made you laugh.

I still just don’t understand spending $130k+ for this car when you can buy a ZR-1 for $105k, or a Viper ACR for slightly less, both of which are substantially faster than the 911 Turbo in every situation, and are actually more rare too.

Doesn’t matter if it has more power, it may still not be able to best the GT-R’s times. It needs AWD to make up for the lost during winds and turns.

ZO6ified, no offense, but you’re a Corvette guy, of course you don’t understand why someone would spend $130,000 for a Turbo instead of spending $105,000 for a ZR-1 which may be faster.

First of all, do you think you’re going to touch a ZR-1 for $105,000? I don’t think so, not after dealers get them marked up. Second, you’re comparing two higher performance lightweight editions to the Turbo, which isn’t one of Porsche’s limited edition, lightweight, higher perfomance vehicles. You’re more or less comparing apples to oranges in this case. If you want a rare car, don’t buy a ZR-1 either, they’re making 2,000 a year. They’re making only 1500 GT2s, and only 200 coming to the US.

Faster doesn’t necessarily mean better either. In most places of the world, you can’t drive the 911 to it’s fullest potential as it is. So what if the ACR and the ZR-1 are faster? Being faster is more or less irrelevent to the topic. Do you seriously think the Viper or the Corvette are going to match the 911 Turbo’s fit and finish, quality of materials, safety, or overall engineering? Of course not. This is the concept that Corvette guys can’t seem to grasp. Even if the Vette is faster and costs less, you’re still not getting a same or better car, period. Did you know that the C6 generation Vette has been ranked the worst sports car on the market for quality and reliability in J.D. Power every year it has been in production?

Ferdinand Porsche always felt that vehicles should have some practicality regardless if the vehicle was performance orientated or not. The 911 Turbo has everyday AND year around driveability that the Viper ACR’s and Corvettes don’t have, hence all of the summer and winter testing Porsche puts all of their vehicles through. Trust me, the testing is far more extensive than what the Vette and Viper go through COMBINED. The Porsches also have a level of practicality that neither of the other two cars have. In a Porsche 911 for example, you have room in the back for two small children, and you could take your family with you on a weekend that you want to be out driving. You also have room for luggage. Let’s say that you’re coming home from a day of driving enjoyment, and you realize you need to get some groceries to make dinner, and it’s late, you can stop on by pick up a few things, and you’re done. That last example may sound corny, but the point is, the 911s are performance cars with some everyday practicality.

I’ve noticed your comments about Porsche’s design updates. Of course the overall design doesn’t change. In fact, the shape of the Porsches is patented. Not only is it easily recongnizable, but the design is functional, it works. Then you said the new Cayman back looks “gay.” I don’t see what is wrong with the back of the car at all. Sure the digital markup didn’t look too great, but pictures of the car itself, it looks fine. Their designers aren’t lazy, it’s hard to keep the same shape of a car and keep updating it.

I’d gladly take ANY Porsche over ANY Corvette or Viper.
