Porsche 911 Turbo: “Brilliant, efficient, German and dull”

07/25/2006, 4:42 PM

By admin

The new 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo may not look too different from its predecessor — a single digit separates the new 997 model from the 996 — but it’s “millions better,” says Jeremy Clarkson. ” If I’d made it, I’d have called it the Porsche Jesus Christ Almighty Would You Look At That Bastard Go,” he writes. Clarkson points to an all-new engine that puts down a massive amount of power, has both low- and high-end power, and is fuel efficient. “In the real world nothing could hang on to the tail of a [911] Turbo. Nothing,” raves Clarkson. Yet he says the car is not on his list of possible supercars to buy. Why? “There’s no passion,” he says. He points to the conservative styling and a similar driving experience. He says driving a “preposterous” Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder is simply more thrilling. “Even though the 911 is the better car, by hundreds of miles, I’d buy the Gallardo.” [Read the full review]

Please, the 997 Turbo is without a doubt the best of the best when it comes to pure driving. I’m lucky enough to sell them and I get to drive all kinds of luxury and sport vehicles. The Ferrari is nice but not practicle on the city streets, the Lambo is great but it doesn’t have the sheer slippery, silky smoothness the the new 911 Turbo has. I’m devilering me 2nd 2007 911 Turbo to a client next week and he’s trading in a 2005 Ferrari F430 for it. It will be interesting to see what comments people make on this site concerning this article. I’ve driven the 996 Turbo and the 997 Turbo as well as many other super sport cars and know what I’m talking about.

Clarkson has a biased against German vehicles. If you’re a Top Gear fan you’d know this. The 997 Turbo smokes the Lambo (many youtube clips proving it). Sure, it’s not as flashy as a Pagani Zonda but those are twice the cost of the Turbos. The best 150k car you can buy.

Turbos are friggin fast as hell. For the performance and technology they are a bargain.

A $140,000 bargain. If that is possible.

#1, David, I totally agree with you. 911 is much more practical on the streets. The 997 Turbo is indeed packed with technologies. For 123k, it is a real bargain for what you get. Wait till they introduce the 7 speed DSG in this beast. Then all hell will break loose.

#2 — David–I do not believe he is trading in a F430. They are worth too much $$$ right now to trade in. They are selling for many, many dollars over MSRP on the open market.

I would not get rid of an F430 for any reason. If I could truly afford one, snapping up a new Turbo would more of a question of garage space than my bank account.

Ferrari ………the best!

what can you say about a car that is simply known as “The Turbo” no other car in the world has that kind of power. There is NO substitute. Porsche makes the BEST sports cars hands down. Amazing performance. Top notch quality/reliability. Everyday drivability. You just cant beat them.

Is exactly true!,..So why would you even want to serve “another god” one who is made up(mythology)or one who has never even walked the earth?…I understand we have a free will and can do whatever we want & serve whoever we want,…Its just disrespectfull to bash God/Jesus because if it werent for him we wouldnt have the ground that we stand on or the air that we breath or a way into heaven, not to mention all the twisty roads we all love so much!

Here in europe; the superiority of Porsche over it’s competitors is well known, I am glad to see that in America the same (in general) thought is present.
It is a shame that such powerfull country like USA cannot make anything that would put in question european sportcars. If that would be the case, we would have even better cars…..

“It is a shame that such powerfull country like USA cannot make anything that would put in question european sportcars.”

You never heard of the Corvette Z06 then? The Dodge Viper isn’t exactly a slouch either. The Saleen S7 twin turbo will pretty much decimate any European exotic.

Have you been living under a rock, or are you just completely ignorant about American performance cars?

More evidence: the Corvette C5-R and C6-R has completely dominated GT1 class for years in both the 24-hours of LeMans, and the entire American LeMans series, against 100% European competition such as Aston Martin and Ferrari. Porsche doesn’t even have a car that can run GT1.

Do you see Porsche anywhere in GT1? I don’t. Corvette is #1 in GT1 – pure fact.

Pick up the latest Car & Driver, and you will see the Corvette Z06 kills the new Porsche 911 turbo and the Ferrari F430 on the track, while costing HALF, and ONE THIRD, respectively. The Z06 out-braked them, out-cornered them, and out-powered them, and even had the highest top speed, and the lightest weight.

PUT UP FACTS, OR SHUT UP.

Having just recently driven the new Porsche Turbo I can say without hesitation,”Best Porsche Yet.” Bravo to the designers, engineers, and to the people who build the cars. It’s difficult for me to see the logic in comparing cars to the new Porsche Turbo, such as Corvette, & the Ferrari 430. They all have their own special qualities and are interstingly unique. If you want some real fun wait till the new Ferrari 599 Fiarano arrives, then you can compare. That car should be named “Holy ****”

Americans don’t make cars, and the corvette isn’t a car its a truct, that thing that can even take corners, for a country who does’nt even have round about, from where I stand I can’t see how you engeneers can make proper sport cars. the porsche is the best car in the world period.
