While Porsche has yet to even deliver the first example of the expected range-topping 918 Spyder supercar, already rumors are flying that the German automaker is simultaneously hard at work developing a V8-powered halo car with an available hybrid powertrain.
This new car, which has not yet been spied or confirmed in any way by Porsche, is rumored to be in development with a 2013 launch in mind, will come with a standard V8, and an optional hybrid powertrain that would push power to 600 – according to AutoBild. The kicker? The car is rumored to carry the 961 name, which once lived only on a race car that saw just three races between 1986 and 1987.
While the original 961 (pictured in a museum) was based on the 959, the new creation will likely share more in common with the aforementioned 918 than anything else.
Rumors prices put the production 961 in the 200,000 euro range.
