Porsche announces AWD-equipped 2009 911 Carrera 4, 4S

Porsche recently revealed details on the entry-level 2009 911 range, and now the German sports-car maker is rolling out the all-wheel drive variants, dubbed the C4 and C4S in both coupe and convertible body styles. Just like the standard 911s, the C4s features direct injection engines for a bump in power and fuel economy along with a drop in emissions.

The main difference between the C4 models and the lesser 911s is the addition of the all-wheel drive system, making the sports car an all-season conveyance to those who live in the snow belt. The system is also new, featuring electronic control of the differentials instead of the old viscous multi-plate clutch. It is a modified version of the system developed for the more powerful 911 Turbo, and features a mechanical limited-slip rear differential as standard equipment.

The Carrera C4 is powered by a new 3.6-liter flat six good for 345 horsepower, up by 20, while the C4S gets a 3.8-liter with 385hp, a bump of 30 ponies. Porsche’s new 7-speed PDK double-clutch gearbox is an option in either model.

All C4 models can be distinguished from standard 911s thanks to wider rear fenders (by about 1.75 inches), a red reflector joining the rear LED brake lights, and LED daytime running lights up front as well as standard bi-xenon headlights.

In the cockpit, a new Porsche Communication Management system will be standard and support Bluetooth, USB devices and iPods, as well as offer easier interface with its touchscreen interface.

The C4 models will start arriving at European dealerships at the end of October, though Porsche has not yet announced pricing.
