Sports cars and fuel economy aren’t often mentioned in the same breath, but Porsche has seemingly melded the two with its all-new Panamera four-door coupe. Although yet to be officially confirmed by the EPA, Porsche has announced some pretty impressive fuel economy figures for the Panamera.
According to Porsche, the base Panamera S and Panamera 4S achieve 16 mpg in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway. Both Panamera models are equipped with a 400 horsepower V8 engine.
Although the range-topping Porsche Panamera Turbo cranks it up a few levels with a 500 horsepower turbocharged V8, the four-door coupe returns fuel economy figures that are almost as impressive as its performance numbers. Porsche says the Panamera Turbo is capable of returning 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.
Moreover, no Panamera model will be subject to a gas guzzler tax. “All models are not subject to the gas guzzler tax,” Porsche Cars North America spokesman Gary Fong told Edmunds.
If those figures prove to be true, the Panamera will have a marked advantage in fuel economy over its closest competitors. The Mercedes-Benz CLS 550 returns 14/21mpg city/highway, while the high-performance CLS63 AMG model only manages 12/18mpg. The Maserati Quattroporte also falls well short of the Panamera, achieving 11/18 mpg city/highway.
