Early look: Porsche Boxster RS 60

11/27/2007, 11:44 AM

By Drew Johnson

Porsche has released images of its Boxster RS 60 Spyder ahead of the car’s December reveal at the Bologna Motor Show in Italy. Inspired by the Porsche Type 718 RS that won the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1960, the limited edition Boxster S will be painted in GT Silver Metallic and feature a Carrera Red interior — although Dark Grey leather is available.

In addition to special badging, the Boxster RS 60 also wears a unique front spoiler and 19-inch Porsche SportDesign wheels. The Boxsters suspension has also been tweaked — now featuring Porsche’s Active Suspension Management system — and a sports exhaust raises the flat six’s output to 303 horsepower.

Porsche will limit RS 60 production to just 1,600 units. The special-edition Boxster will be available beginning in March in the UK and Ireland with a starting price of £45,400.

Yeah, I never was a fan of the Boxter. It’s a great car i’m sure. It’s a Porsche after all. In most of the comparos between it and the BMW Z4, Audi S4 Cabriolet the Boxter comes out on top but with only 303hp and for the price it does face very stiff competition. for 40k I don’t care what anyone says I’ll still take a Corvette. Now if Porsche could come out with a Boxter with 400hp I may reconsider…

jackjimturkey,
Your clearly an idiot.

Rotman,
Underpowered? Serious competition from loads of other brands?
Your a funny guy. Maybe you and Jackjimturkey can get together and try to figure out who’s a bigger idiot.

The Boxster S’ main competitor is the Z4 M. The MB SLK is also considered in the same “Category” but is rarely included in any comparison test due to it always getting clobbered by the two.
The Boxster, as far as I know, has always won and edged out ahead of the Z4 M. So I don’t really see where your getting at.
As far as your comment on underpowered. Hmm, let’s see:
Boxster S: 295hp
Z4 M: 330hp
Z4 M clearly has more horsepower, yet on quarter mile acceleration it runs identical to the “underpowered”(as you say) Boxster S’ with the BMW having a slightly lower trap speed.
So I just don’t know where your getting at.

Boxster has plenty of pep. From my point of view it is very attractive two seater, when Z4 is a mistake (followed by Benz error). There is alway a question of how much power one would need and and additional question should be “to do what?”. Boxster is quick from the start and great on the curvy road. If I would go for sporty feeling, air where my hair use to be and seat of the pants thrill I would entertain Lotus Elise and its derivatives, but for athletic and comfortable machine and the one that is not painful to look at Boxster is on the top of the game.

Whats good about Porsche is that they deliver alot of performance for the amount of HP they put out. 303hp is plenty, but not as much as other cars in the same price range, but a 303hp Boxster will be quicker than a 390hp SVT mustang cobra. Porsche just knows how to make better use out of the power it delivers.

I distinctly recall passing a Boxster this past summer being driven by a guy that I’m pretty sure still had his own hair. I love to follow these things around when I see they’re being driven by Joe Retirement. They must be geared pretty low to make it through school zones in 5th gear. Hey…come to think of it, what are these old dudes doing cruising school zones in their Porsches to begin with…?

Rotman, the end is near for the entry level Porsche?
I totally disagree. The entry level Porsche is what keeps the company afloat. Porsche went out of its way to make the Boxster to have more range. Its here to stay.

Gosh I hope you’re right Jazz about the red-scale being off because that interior almost looks like a dark shade of pink. I mean I’ve heard of custom interiors but that better be a brighter red or i’m going to have to agree with the femminine comments that are being circulated on this post. But I do love a red interior in a silver car. It’s sexy.

I like a nice clean interior, and I think this car delivers that, any more then that I say screw it it just makes it more expensive. Sometimes I think you guys would rather re-decorate your bathroom then work on your cars…

The Boxster and Boxster S are WAY underpowered. These are Porsches and are not even under 5 seconds 0-60 which is not much performance. Infiniti’s G37 and BMW’s 330 are both faster than Boxsters are.

Porsche is losing its prestige. You can pretend that your Porsche is special, only when you can outrun other cars. But when you are slower and have less technology (not even Bluetooth for cryin’ out loud) well that is just lame.

a boxter looks better, sounds better, feels better, steers better and overall is better than an infiniti or BMW 330. All you Imericans should just stick to driving fords and chevvys that have already lost their prestige they had in the 60s and 70s, and the cars us Australians have to make for you that are better than yours lmao. seriously porsche is better though.

someone please explain to me the need for bluetooth in a sportscar. i actually don’t see the need for it in any car, but in a porsche of all things …. ?

Well with bluetooth can’t you hook up with many of your your bluetooth compatible accessories like an ear-piece for example? Seeing how hazardous and distracting talking on a cell phone while driving a stick is, I immedietely discovered how handy that accessory is. I think all vechicles need to have that equipped. It attempts at making things a little safer. So why shouldn’t Porsche have it?

Ok gumball first off “and the cars us Australians have to make for you that are better than yours? I don’t know exactly which cars you are referring to but Holden is a subsidiary of whom???? And WHO makes your beloved Falcon?

The Boxster is an eleven year old model therefore it has a lot of competition. I’m not talking about face-to-face competitors, but in general. I really like Porsche though, probably the best cars money can buy nowadays and I would steal one if I would know how to do that. The Cayman is a very promising successor and I think Porsche should go on with that and leave the 987 for what it is.

Hmmm, let’s see. Corvette base model: 430hp

Price: Corvette $45k. Boxster S $56k.

Pay more, get 145 less horsepower. Handling and braking about the same. Styling subjective.

You don’t see a problem with that?

The Boxster S is weak, underpowered and overpriced. It is a fine handling car, but its had its balls removed so that Porsche can sell more 911s at a higher profit. That’s my problem with Porsche.

SS4Life: I hate those obnoxious bluetuuth earpieces. Seriously, only POTUS needs to talk while in a moving car. And he’s usually not only not driving, but can raise the partition so as not to distract the driver

Rotman: you can get a better car than a porsche.

Zo6ified: Boxster is a miata with real horsepower. As such, it probably rates high on the “fun-to-drive” scale.

C’mon guys! Anyone who knows Porsche knows that the Boxter and Boxter S are NOT meant to outrun everything in the 1/4mile. It’s strictly competition for the BMW Z4 and Z4 M, and maybe the MBZ SLK. Sure it could do with a little price cut, but it’s not meant as an entry level car for us 21 year olds. It’s a car for someone who can afford a Cayman, or maybe even a 911, but doesn’t want a lot of power. They just want a great all around car. And if anyone has ever had the opportunity of getting to drive one(my former boss has one, I was his P.A.), he/she would agree that it’s a HELL of a lot of fun to drive, albeit not the fastest car ever since it wasn’t meant to be. My former boss has the money to buy TWO Veyron’s for ****s sake, but he chose not to.

Why shouldn’t a Porsche Boxster have Bluetooth? It’s not like it is a Ferrari Enzo. Its almost 2008, time to get with the program. I guess you don’t want to get distracted by technology as you watch the kids in Subarus and Mitsubishis pass you by I guess.

I actually like the looks of the Boxster and the Cayman, but I wouldn’t buy either one because they are way underpowered to cost 50k plus when lesser cars smoke them. For cryin’ out loud a BMW 335 passing a Porsche? You don’t find that a little embarassing for Porsche?

The purpose of a sports car is to perform. If it doesn’t do that, then it is not a sports car.

When a Mitsubishi EVO, Subaru WRX, BMW 335, Infiniti G37, hell even a Nissan 350z all run nearly equal to or better than a Porsche, then your reputation gets tarnished.

Once you realize there’s more to life than racing Camaro’s from a stop light we can talk. A Z06 is faster than MOST cars out there. But it’s a Chevy. Where do you think the Valet will park it?

An Evo, a Scubie STI…at some point you may need to drive your boss home and you bazooka muffler just looks bad.

Realize there’s more that 0-60. There’s 40-70 for pass, skidpad numbers, slalom, lateral translation. And then there’s build quality. Have you seen the rental car interior of a Vette lately.

The Boxster chasis can take more Hp, but won’t due to the 911’s position. Even still it is a proper roadster, under 3000lbs and a two seater. The new M3 vert is 4200lbs, that’s fun in the twisties…

The RS60 is fast enough, can lose most cars with bigger engines, but less balanced platforms in the twisties and as for the kid with the gel in his hair, the hypers-spoiler and the bluetooth enabled iphone…c’mon, we’re grown-ups here. An evo is fun and fast but not for adults. A digital Timex keeps better time than an automatic Patek-Philippe, but which one do you want on your wrist?

You pay for style, you pay for prestige and in the RS 60’s case you pay for handling. If that’s hard to envision, get in your slammed Civic and spin the front wheels in annoyance to everyone around you.
