Video: 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder marches to the beat of a different drum

02/02/2010, 9:18 AM

By Drew Johnson

In case you have forgotten, Porsche wants to remind you it will be launching a new model this month – the 2011 Boxster Spyder. In order to keep the new light-weight model in your thoughts, Porsche has released an official trailer for the Boxster Spyder, showing the 2,811 lbs. two-door doing what it does best — carving up twisty roads.

Most notably, the car has a lower windscreen than the regular Boxster S, resulting in a more dramatic roofline when the hand-operated canvas top is up. Combined with the two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, the car has a silhouette somewhat reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

Although the canvas roof offers some degree of protection from the elements, the Spyder is clearly intended for use in warm and sunny conditions.

Power comes from a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine with Direct Fuel Injection. Output is 320 horsepower, which is 10 more than the Boxster S. The firmer suspension rides nearly an inch lower than the S, resulting in firmer handling.

When equipped with the PDK dual-clutch transmission and Sports Chrono Package, the Spyder is capable of accelerating to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Top track speed is 166 mph, with the roof open.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche produced limited editions of the Boxster bearing the Spyder name. Unlike those cars, the new model is intended as a production car that will continue to be offered alongside the the Boxster and Boxster S on a less limited basis.

The 2011 Boxster Spyder goes on sale this month with a starting pricing of $61,200.

If only more automakers figured out that less weight and more power equal one heck of an awesome vehicle.

Let’s see… we’ve had stirrings, youthful passion, sex appeal, naked bodies, sex and pure sex.

Either it’s been too long for most of you or I’ve accidentally wandered over to my ‘other’ favorite site.

I have to correct the article.

Although the side windows are lower profile, the windscreen is not lower than the regular Boxster as you state.

Additionally note that the Spyder will not be at dealers until late March. Porsche states the car will for “for sale” in February. The first factory production for the US starts in February. Porsche also stated that European Spyder was going to be “for sale” in January, yet no one has taken delivery there yet. I wish Porsche wouldn’t confuse people with their definition of for sale vs, invoiced to PNCA (North American Importer for the USA). Yes to Porsche AG they have completed the sale once it rolls on to that ship but it confuses the consumer as it takes 4-6 weeks to cross the pond and hit the dealerships.

Also note due to low production, no launch cars (early pre determined demo cars) will be offered.

I have a estimated completion date of March 4th for my order (placed a deposit the day it was released back in November). I was lucky enough to be present for the World Premiere press conference in LA back in December. The car looks even better in the flesh!

Super excited for this car… it’s the first Porsche I’ve ordered… been saving/waiting for some time now for a car like this.

navanoD, I just posted this on Planet9, wasn’t sure if it was new footage or not. I can’t wait for the end of June when mine is suppose to be delivered. I have an early May completion date, at lease that’s what my dealer is telling me. Can’t wait for the sunny Northern CA days and months to come in the Spyder :)

PCW- It’s not new footage. Porsche themselves just recently released it so it new to the general public. It was used for the World Premier December 2nd as part of the press conference. Someone else posted it on YouTube in the beginning of January. It’s a pretty cool video! The wait is killing me. I also agree this is a poor mans Carrera GT… but I’m poor and 100% fine with that! :)

i don’t see it as a poor man’s anything…this platform handles better than the 911 hands down…give them equal power and tires and see which one has a quicker lap time…for a driving purist (not a 911 purist, but a driving purist) then this car is set up better than a 911…

I hate how the Boxster looks. It looks like a bubble to me. There is no aggressiveness in the design whatsoever. But this car looks much much better than the normal version. I really like the back.
