Production of the legendary $440,000 Porsche Carrera GT ended today (Saturday, May 6) at the Porsche plant Leipzig, Germany. Production began in September, 2003. A total of 1,270 units were built — 27 percent higher than the planned 1,000 units. A reported 53 percent of the cars went to the United States, 12 percent to Germany, and 7 percent to the United Arab Emirates. Porsche has not announced any plans for a follow-up to the 612 horsepower supercar. To commemorate the Carrera GT, we’ve got a great video after the jump from those crazy Brits at Top Gear…

I dont think this car was as insane as it should have been. It needed to be having more power IMHO. It just wasnt insane enough. It looked the part, had that great presence, but it just didnt have the sound I dont think and the power. The Pagani Zonda F is more of a supercar than the Carrera GT. The Carrerra should have had a 700 hp engine, no less. I guess its looks didnt match what it was capable of IMHO. And that is exactly what Jeremy Clarkson said as well in his rant about supercars. IMHO, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 has got it right, so does the Zonda F and the Clubsport version and the Merc SLR.

I don’t recall hearing about these being available in 2000. They began producing them in late 2003.

My neighbor has a boatload of nice cars and he has one of these. They’re beautiful and sound amazing. I was following him one day in the H2 and he rocketed forward and in a matter of seconds he was so far that I could barely notice him. It definately is an awesome car. Hopefully he won’t get rid of it. Imagine the worth in a few years.

If you think high end supercars are only about hp you have a lot to learn about them.
This car was truely great. I am glad to see it go though. They already built more then they were going to so I say let it stop before they flood the market. I have only seen one in my life and honestly I wouldn’t mind keeping it that way. It just adds to the mystique of the car.

Surya, I fail to recognize how the heavier, less powerful Murcielago LP640 is ‘more’ of a supercar than the Carrera GT. The Carrera GT, in my opinion, is one of ‘the’ supercars – trailing only behind the Zonda F for pure craziness and drama.
The Carrera GT has everything you want in a supercar – and more. It’s drop-dead gorgeous, it has a scintillating engine noise (especially up near the rev range), it has power to boot along with the speed that would make you **** your pants before you could scream “Hallelujah!”. It’s also light, a near-race-spec engine and is out of reach for 99.85723% of the world’s population. If that’s not ‘insane’ enough, I fail to see what is.

I disagree with Surya in that, i believe the Carerra GT was an incredibly extreme, awesome supercar. no doubt in my mind about it. but i do agree with him that the lamborghini murcielago lp640 is more exteme, because it is. sh.yoon, the lp640 actually is more powerful than the carerra gt, but that doesn’t mean the carerra gt isn’t an amazing exotic car

It’s sad that an overpriced impractical automobile that I could never even look at it is gone? Speak for yourself, a sad day for car enthusiast will be the day, when there are no more low priced practical cars to toy with.

To the idiot that said the LP640 is more ‘extreme’ than the CGT, just because it has more power doesn’t mean its more extreme. Tell me something would you consider a Catepilliar Quarry Dump Truck extreme? It does after all have a 5000hp V-24 or something to that length. The fact remains WEIGHT is an issue fool. The CGT is much lighter than the LP640 will ever be. I love Murcielagos, but they are indeed heavy. Oh and to my dearest friend anonymous, go die right now. The pratical cars are of course worth mentioning, but find a thread where it doesnt involve the late CGT or for that matter any supercar. Enthusiasts in your definition we may not be, but I will have my genitals removed before you insult any supercar. Each one is amazing in its own right and try to tell me that you wouldn’t love to drive a Carrera GT if the keys were offered to you. So please do us all a favor and shutup you ignorant 10 year old.

Patrick, would you please elaborate on why the LP640 is more extreme than the Carrera GT? It’s hardly justification to say “because it is.” That’s just a waste of a comment.

I’ve seen plenty of the around Salt Lake City. I had the opportunity to sit in one parked next to an Enzo, Ford GT and a Marciliago. Sat in all four cars. Although I’m a huge Porsche fan, the GT really isn’t that great a supercar. I think the Ford GT is a much nicer vehicle, and I’m not a Ford person at all. The Ford GT is sweet. Porsche needs to come up with a better car to emulate all that the marque stands for. I wasn’t impressed with the Enzo either. Its a rather ugly design.
