Report: Porsche to launch diesel Cayenne next year

Porsche plans to launch a diesel version of its Cayenne SUV in 2009, according to a new report. Rather than using a large engine for the new variant, Porsche elected to focus on fuel efficiency, and therefore chose a twin-turbocharged V6.

The engine will come from Audi, industry analyst Peter Schmidt told Automotive News Europe. The 3.2-liter unit is expected to produce over 300 horsepower and deliver 30 mpg. Rising fuel economy and emissions regulations worldwide are cited as the primary motivation for the project.

Porsche is also known to be planning a Cayenne Hybrid, but recent rumors suggest the powertrain might not be offered until the next-generation Cayenne arrives in 2010. If true, that means the diesel Cayenne will be the company’s flagship “green” vehicle for at lest a year.

Way to go.

Now how about giving Audi’s V8 Diesel a Quadturbo and put it in there? Should be good for about 450-500 horses and wouldn’t way as much as the V12..

Omg, the world is ending! A diesel Porsche! AAAAARH!
Just kidding…
I do hope that this VW sourced engine will not have the same problems the current petrol V6 has!

I thought that Porsche would never use a diesel? I, for one, am glad that they are. I would much rather drive a diesel then a hybrid, even though I will never be able to afford this one.

Veda, just a reminder $103/barrel of oil. When it trickles down to a gas it is about $4/gallon. It is a bit more expensive in Europe (double to be precise) and they love diesel cars because it is the difference between driving a car or pedaling a bicycle. At some point plain economics will settle in - fuel is fukcing expensive and it will get more expensive and it is a fact of life.

autonut your point is valid but Veda’s point speaks volumes as well. I also feel this negates Porsche’s whole inspiration for introducing the Cayenne in the first place and that was to create the Porsche of SUVs- not just another sluggish, overweight excuse for a tall station wagon.
