2010 Porsche Cayenne Diesel launched in Europe; could be headed to U.S.

By Nick Aziz

Amidst the excitement of the LA Auto Show, Porsche quietly unveiled its 2010 Cayenne Diesel in Europe, where it will go on sale in February. The fuel-efficient model won’t be offered in North America initially, but the company said in a press release “preparations for market introduction in other countries are underway.”

That means there’s a distinct possibility the SUV could be offered in the United States at some point in the future. A potential timeframe is not yet known, but we wouldn’t expect to see the SUVs in dealerships before early 2010.

Powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel, this Cayenne delivers 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Mileage is estimated at 25.3 U.S. mpg. A Tiptronic-S gearbox transmits power to all four wheels.

Porsche is working on a hybrid version of the Cayenne which it says will be “launched onto the market at the end of the decade.” The Cayenne Hybrid is expected to achieve at least 26 mpg.

This is the ugliest Sport utility vehicle ever. And yet it still costs more than a Cadillac Escalade or Yukon Denali. Talk about throwing your money away.

Is their pickup truck going to get this engine as well? I know they don’t have one… yet, but I just want to get used to the idea gradually.

@Need more oil for GM,
talking about throwing our money away, what about those pleas of my tax dollars to pay your salary? I hope you don’t live long, ’cause I hate to pay those taxes!

You’ll be paying taxes when the bailout goes through. Teach you import idiots a lesson not to buy foriegn garbage. Instead you should do the right thing and buy American like GM! Otherwise, you are a damned fool.

To put the Cayenne Diesel into perspective, it helps to look at the other models. The Cayenne S and its 4.8L V8, a delightful engine in its own right, puts 369 pound-feet of torque at the driver’s disposal at 3,500 rpm. In fact, the diesel only has to take a back seat to the all-conquering Cayenne Turbo S and its 4.8L twin-turbo — it twists out 553 lb-ft of torque at 2,250 rpm. You see, the diesel manages to churn out a tire-shredding 405 lb-ft at just 2,000 rpm! This is enough to motivate around 2,500 kilograms of leather-lined sport-ute to 100 kilometres an hour in 8.3 seconds. The VTG turbo eliminates lag and cuts the tendency for the performance to tail off as engine speed rises. At low engine speeds, the vanes tighten, which means the exhaust gas spins the turbine wheel at full pressure — this eliminates the dreaded lag time and sharpens the engine’s response to driver input.
