In January, Porsche officials apparently told Dutch magazine Auto Telegraaf that it had no plans for a high-performance Cayman model about the Cayman S coupe. But according to the latest issue of Britain’s AutoCar magazine, new prototypes have been seen in testing at the Nurburgring. The test cars are believed to be for the ‘Cayman RS’ — a race oriented version of the Cayman. It won’t have a more powerful engine, but the magazine says it will be lighter, have a roll cage, feature racing seats, and have firmer suspension. We suspect this strategy may be a compromise to prevent cannibalization of 911 sales. The ‘RS’ would be fast, but by having the same engine as the Cayman S, and a very un-luxurious interior, it wouldn’t compete with its bigger brother. Of course, if you really want a fast Cayman, be sure to check out the 405 hp Cayman GTR by Farnbacher Loles Motorsports.
