Porsche officially unveils Cayman S Sport

08/04/2008, 12:09 PM

By Drew Johnson

In order to spike demand for the last few examples of the current-generation Cayman sports car, Porsche officially unveiled an S Sport edition of the Cayman. In addition to helping Porsche dealers move a few more Caymans before an updated version arrives in mid-2009, the Cayman S Sport will also commemorate Porsche’s 60th anniversary.

Like the S Sport Edition of the Porsche Boxster last year, the Cayman S Sport will boast a sports chrono pack, upgraded brakes and suspension, as well as a two-toned paint scheme inspired by the GT3 — and available in the GT3’s orange and green colors. A boost in power is also part of the package, with output for the Cayman S Sport totaling 303 horsepower.

Although Porsche has yet to announce pricing, CarTribe speculates that the limited-edition Cayman will list from about £49,890 in the UK. Porsche will limit Cayman S Sport production to just 700 units.

Seriously, I love Porsche but what kind of idiot buys into this marketing scam? Wait another year and get the new version!

What the hell is 60th anniversary? ****, you might as well trim it down to every year… celebrate 61st next year, and charge a little more.

What does the S stand for? Surely it’s not a Cayman Sport Sport.

My favorite too — I have no use for 911.

Just look at the 911 and you can see what might go into the Cayman, just not as good. The thing with the Cayman is because of its price compared to the 911 it will always be a couple steps behind, and not because Porsche doesn’t put their time into it, but because if they made it as good or better than nobody would buy a 911 obviously. We can see the same thing with the R8 compared to the Gallardo even if they are from “different” companies. My point is as good as the Cayman is, why pay for a car that is deliberately made to have a lower potential? Now if you are an aftermarket kind of guy then forget about everything I just said b/c this is the Porsche tuner platform right here!

I thought the “S” designation did stand for Sport?

======>>for everybody on the naming subject, “S” does stand for sport. Cayman S Sport is a sporty”er” version of the Cayman Sport. Think Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, the racecar version of the sporty”er” version of the 911 GT3.

Why in the hell are they painting this car orange again???? The orange boxster’s couldn’t sell, what makes them think that these will?

How the hell do you get any “sportier” than a 911?

I’ll take one in Orange. The added suspension and brakes makes this more interesting for sure, regardless of what the 09 has to offer.

+8HP? I am insulted. The Cayman could be a great car with +80HP for a new total of 375HP, still much less than the 480HP legend-in-the-making GT-R, but still much better than the insulting +8HP that Porsche AG is so generously giving us in its all mighty arrogance.
