There is no mistaking a Porsche 911 for what it is, and that is no mistake. Some say that is a downside, while Porsche sees that as very much intended.

Porsche decided to simultaneously put its design critics to task, as well as to pay homage to its past and humor it fans with a new video that explains just how important the “911 identity” is, and why the latest 911 looks the way it does.

(More after video)

The German automaker explains why it is that it chooses to largely follow an evolutionary design path, rather than the revolutionary design changes typically utilized by other makes: brand identity. Porsche wants a familiar look and feel with every 911, linking its past to the present, but still making sure to never stop advancing its engineering along the way.

The result recently arrived in the all-new 911 Carrera Coupe and 911 Carrera Cabriolet – pick your poison.
