A Porsche representative told Germany’s Welt am Sonntag that the company is considering a “fifth model” after the introduction Panamera. This statement is somewhat confusing because the Panamera would be Porsche’s fifth model. Porsche’s lineup currently includes the 911, Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne. However, if Porsche considers the Boxster and Cayman Cayenne to be the same model line, then this might indicate a new model is indeed under consideration. What would that model be? There have been rumors recently of a “baby Cayenne,” but what enthusiasts are really interested in is the proposed revival of the Porsche 928. Road and Track recently said a new 928 (shown right) could come in 2010.

Could someone explain the difference of 928 v 911? Like price, appointments, HP, Handling and/or target market? It seems like there would be too much overlap with a 928 AND a 911.

The original 928 had a front mounted V-8 and was positioned to eventually replace the 911. It never did, and I think it’s because it wasn’t unique enough. Too many other exotics have front mounted V-8’s. Only one has a rear mounted flat 6.

My recollection is that most people hated the 928 from it’s introduction until it was finally killed– why bring it back? My high-school history teacher said when the 928 came out, “Porsches aren’t front engined.” The Cayenne may be accepted for for practical reasons, but another high performance GT? Still, most people have come to accept water-cooled Porsches, so maybe the world is ready for another 928– at least if it’s less ugly than the original.

It’ll be a baby Cayenne, purely for the profit margin.

The 928 was laid out like a muscle car, with a nice V8 in a long hood for a RWD car. The 911 is unique, and therefore will last longer than the 928 which will compete with so many other cars. However, I trust that Porsche will do a good job with the new 928, just because it’s front-engined doesnt mean it’s bad. My dad’s Porsche 944 S2 is a great car.

I’m betting on a baby-Cayenne for profit margin reasons. However, couldn’t the Panamera platform be used for a large GT car (a new 928?). It makes perfect sense to me.
