With Porsche now officially under the control of Volkswagen, the German sports car maker is exploring ways to expand global sales. New models are certainly part of that push, but Porsche is also considering moving some production to North America or China.

Porsche is planning to double its sales to 200,000 units by 2018, which will likely require some production to shift outside of Europe. Given the importance of the United States market and the potential growth in China, Porsche is considering moving some production to one of those regions.

“We will consider this year whether to start production in Asia or North America,” Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller told Focus magazine.

Mueller admitted that there might be some challenges in selling a North American or China-made Porsche, but said the automaker should be “OK as long as we can say our cars are ‘engineered by Porsche.’”

It remains to be seen which models are being considered for production outside of Germany, but Porsche has plenty of models to choose from. The automaker will soon launch a compact SUV called the Cajun, a smaller roadster to slot beneath the Boxster and a targa version of the Cayman coupe.
