Porsche considering targa, diesel versions of the Panamera

06/27/2008, 4:51 PM

By Drew Johnson

The Porsche Panamera is still several months away from production, but Porsche engineers are reportedly working on two new versions of the four-door sports car: a Panamera Targa and a diesel-powered Panamera.

As with Porsche’s from the past, AutoWeek.com says that Porsche is currently developing a three-panel targa roof for the Panamera. The targa version of the Panamera would likely stand alone as its own model.

In addition to the targa version, AutoWeek says Porsche is seriously considering a diesel-powered version of the Panamera. No specific engine has been earmarked for Panamera duty, but Porsche does have access to Audi’s range of diesels, which includes a 3.0L V6, 4.2L V8 and 6.0L V12.

Although the Porsche Cayenne diesel will use Audi’s 3.0L V6, the Panamera would likely use either the V8 or V12 to keep performance up to snuff.

AutoWeek also got a glimpse at both production model — base and turbo — saying that both cars were equipped with front fender vents “reminiscent of Ford Focus vents.”

So Porsche hasn’t learned from Maybach mistakes… I don’t know if the Targa version would secure this model but what I do know is that Targa and Panamera are two words that could easily mean FAILURE.
The Diesel one sound reasonable though.

Porsche also announced today there will be a 2 door version of the Panamera as several customers invited for a sneak peek during testing complained their egos wouldn’t fit through the smaller openings.

Of course it will sell, what I don’t think is that it will remain in top as much as the Quattroporte.
Personally don’t like the idea of a Porsche Sedan, at least not looking so not-great. Hope Porsche makes all of us that think this ain’t great eat our words.

@ door Panamera reminiscent of 928. At first it sold well, was major star of “Risky business” and then discontinued. Air cooled 911 is still the bread winner. I’m sure there are brilliant marketing minds working for Porsche, but their overall plan of attack is less then clear to me: they are spending billions trying to buy WV group wish owns Benty, Lambo and Bugatii. Why they need front engine super car? To compete with themselves?

I live in the area (Borneo, Indonesia) where SUVs and trucks are the vehicles that we need. And actually I will never buy any coupe or sedan. But reading 4-doors Porche makes me laugh a bit. I don’t know that currently Porsche is interested to target family market. Sorry, porsche fans.
