The Porsche 918 Spyder is still a couple of years away from production, but the German automaker is once again discussing the possibility of a new model to slot beneath the halo supercar.
There is quite a gap atop Porsche’s lineup, with the 918 set to list from $845,000 and the next model down fetching a paltry-in-comparison $245,000. Porsche has discussed the possibility of a new model to slot between those price points before, with the company apparently keen to fill that gap.
“There already are initial ideas that look very promising on paper,” Bernhard Maier, Porsche’s sales chief, said of a new sub-918 supercar. “Between the top 911 model and the 918 Spyder, there’s a price range that we’re not serving, but where other manufacturers are selling one or another product.”
According to previous reports, one of the possible designs on the table is a mid-engine super coupe. The new model would borrow some of its front-end components from the 911 while the rear section of the car would largely be derived from the Boxster/Cayman. It remains to be seen what engine Porsche might use in the car, but a 3.4L V8 derived from the 918 isn’t out of the question.
