Porsche mulling pulling Boxster, Cayman contract from Magna

09/28/2009, 1:49 PM

By Drew Johnson

Magna’s pending acquisition of General Motors’ Opel brand will give the Canadian supplier a point of entry into the OEM automobile manufacturing industry, but the purchase of Opel could also cost Magna some contract manufacturing business.

According to Autoweek, Porsche is strongly considering pulling its contract with Magna to produce the next-generation Boxster and Cayman if the Canadian supplier successfully purchases the Opel brand from General Motors. Magna currently produces the Boxster and Cayman for Porsche, but that relationship could end in 2013 when new versions of both vehicles are slated to debut.

If Porsche decides to pull the Boxster/Cayman contract from Magna, the production responsibilities would likely fall to Karmann – a longtime Volkswagen partner.

The potential production shift is intended to safeguard Porsche’s plans for an upcoming entry-level roadster and coupe. With Magna set to become a full-on automobile maker, Porsche is concerned that its current relationship with Magna could give the one-time supplier a compromising view of its product pipeline.

No word on when a final decision might be handed down, but the news appears to be positive for Karmann as the Boxster/Cayman contract is believed to be valued nine-figure range.

Interesting to see how all the new automotive allignments are causing concerns and worries in the industry. Good for Karmann though. Weren’t they running out of contract work?

To me this isn’t an issue with the Boxter/Cayman, which is at a premium compared to what’s been produced before by Opel, such as the GT and the Speeder. This an issue between a lower end model that Porsche might be producing, which could be interesting seeing that Lotus is rumored to be working on a lower end model as well.

Hey Karmann, is that a bratwurst in your Lederhosen or are you just showing Porsche the way to the factory?

Karmann deserves it.
aesir, the Bluesport/914 was supposedly off when Porsche was going to be the ones taking over VW. VW wanted the Bluesport, but it was only financially viable if Porsche would get on board. Now that Porsche is Volkswagens baby back bitch, the Bluesport/914 is back on.

Thanks for the update A4, man I can’t believe how south that deal went for Porsche. I really don’t think that’s the way to go. I think VW is going to kill Porsche with its current attitude.

They’re going to devalue the brand by producing an entry level model. They’re ditching the Cayenne which is a sports/lux SUV in favor of the Audi Q7. They have similar action with the Panamera. (Ignoring the fact that the styling on the Panamera is a bit rough, but the same can be said about the 1st gen Cayenne.)

Look I know Audi won the Le Mans a few times, but still Porsche has so much more history….I feel they’re trying to put Audi on a pedastal above Porsche. It’s like VW is saying shut up and pump out a million different variants of the 911, have a nice day.

From a personal consumer, I just don’t know that I want average joe driving a 914 when I have a Cayman; however, that’s probably how the 911 owners feel about me.

I guess I don’t understand why Porsche can’t be a bridge between Bentley/Bugatti and don’t even talk to me about producing another Phaeton.

LOL @ johnny

you’re right, aesir, the same argument was made by 911 purists about the boxster/cayman when they came out…cheapening the brand and appealing to a broader market reduced their exclusivity…that is even a line repeated on top gear many times…owning boxster says (paraphrasing), “can’t afford a 911″ more than “sports car enthusiast”…

as long as the bluesport is done right, and it ends up a porsche quality sporting car, then i think it’s a fine move…if the car comes out compromised in order to hit a price target, then that would tarnish the image a bit and show the VW influence…

aesir , by your logic the Ferrari V8 cars are diluting the Ferrari brand and they should only make the V12 models. cheaper cars don’t dilute a brand, bad cars do.

………. let me clarify. The national average for income is something like $48k/yr. Currently the base Boxster costs 46,600; however, you would never find one that cheap new in the states. You’re going to spend at least 50 grand for something in inventory. (European delivery changes everything.)

The “experts” say you shouldn’t spend more than 20% of your take home pay on a car. Which means at most someone in that kind of category shouldn’t be making car payments more than $500. Giving a $5000 down to continue my generosity, that means that the absolute most the average person should spending for a car is $30,000. The base Boxster being $50,000 (for one that you would actually find in inventory) safely keeps the car out of the average consumer.

Release a 914 in the 370Z territory and you get, the 370Z being bought by your average American. Thanks, but no thanks.

The Ferrari V8 being isn’t even close to being in this price range, additionally the wait list on new Ferraris is ridiculous, which is why used ones sell over MSRP. So this totally doesn’t qualify.

price is relative, a Ferrari V8 is a great car for a rich guy , but it is the 914 of Ferrari for the ultra rich.

i have a 911 and i like Porsche in general i would not be offended if Porsche was building a new 914. heck , they can even built a 3 cylinder diesel FWD car based on the VW Lupo as long as it is a good car. the 914 won’t be faster than a Cayman, just like the Cayman isn’t faster than the 911 , the guy who only buys the more expensive car for the image doesn’t have to worry and his ego is safe.

i’m sure a guy driving a SLR doesn’t have a problem with someone driving a 1.4L A class, because no matter what car MB builds , the SLR is the SLR , same for Porsche and the 911.
