Porsche planning more production cuts

07/02/2009, 5:58 PM

By Drew Johnson

Amid slumping sales, Porsche is said to be considering reducing production of its 911 Carrera model. The proposed plan would see Porsche idling the 911’s Zuffenhausen, Germany production plant around the Christmas holiday.

Porsche’s sales have tumbled 28 percent in recent month, causing a backlog of inventory. In order to better align supply with demand, a Porsche official revealed to Reuters that the German automaker is considering a reduction in 911 production.

“We have to think about this if car sales continue to develop like this and do not recover again,” the source said.

Porsche’s Zuffenhausen factory has been idled for 11 unplanned days since January, with a previously unscheduled 19 day shutdown now in place for the company’s summer break. It remains unclear how many days Porsche is considering shuttering the 911 plant for during the Christmas holiday.

Porsche’s other factories are expect to continue unaffected by the Zuffenhausen plant’s shutdown.

After getting outsold by Hummer in June, I can’t say I blame them.

Besides, this is what they get for not making cars people want and having incompetent management.

I think Impulsive has the right idea. Lower the prices, the cayman is an amazing car, but not that much better than a 370Z that costs about half as much :(

Dante,
It is more than twice better than the 370Z (I love it too), “better” is not only faster or quicker, is a combination of things that Porsche has over Nissan.
There’s a Boxster in my garage, and unless you drive it, you’ll ever think it’s a chick car.

I beg the difference as far as Cayman vs. Z. With manual transmission it is drivers car. I am quoting horsepower here, it is in feel of the car.

I do realize that it’s more than just speed, but for what you get in a porsche, it’s really the name. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trashing the Cayman in any way. If someone offered me one or a 370Z I’d take the Cayman S no question about it.
