Porsche boosts Cayenne pricing for 2009; Turbo S tops $124k

By Drew Johnson

Following on the heels of the news that Porsche will launch a diesel version of its Cayenne SUV in 2009, the German automaker has released official pricing for its 2009 Cayenne lineup. Per the current trend in the industry, the Cayenne’s sticker price will be increasing between 2.3 and 4.3 percent. The 2009 Turbo S is the exception, costing 11 percent more than the 2006 model, which was produce for just one year.

For 2009, the base Cayenne will be priced from $45,495 with the up-level Cayenne S starting at $60,295. The performance-minded Cayenne GTS will list from $71,795, while the Cayenne Turbo will sticker from $98,595.

The uber Cayenne Turbo S – which will hit U.S. dealers August 8 – will set back buyers at least $124,495.

Porsche cites the weak U.S. dollar for the price hike. “Although our sports cars and Cayenne SUV wear their quality label ‘Made in Germany’ with pride, we find ourselves getting severely punished by declining margins for serving our customers in the United States,” Detlev von Platen, CEO of Porsche Cars North America Inc., said in a statement.

Ironically, the Cayenne SUV remains Porsche most popular model – with sales increasing each month — and is actually outselling its iconic lineup of pure-bred sports cars. For the year, Cayenne sales are up 12.4 percent – to 5,342 units – while Porsche car sales are down 27.9 percent, totaling 7,904 units.

The 2009 Cayenne will hit U.S. showrooms on July 14.

Wow. Pretty large price gap between models. I had actually thought the base price was a little higher, but the turbo was fairly lower.

Detlev von Platen is blaming the US economy and soft dollar for the increase? Nice move, dickwad. This is coming from a company that resisted even making the Cayenne 10 years ago, and now it is their top seller. They recently resisted a 4 door, and it looks like the Panamera will be here soon. $125K for an SUV. Porsche might sell 3 of them.

what does their hesitancy with originally producing the cayenne have to do with you not believing the weak dollar is reducing porsche’s profit margins?

Despite all the bitching this is the best market Porsche has.
