The Cayenne may be one of Porsche’s most controversial models, but the German automaker has just produced its 100,000th unit of the second-generation performance off-roader.
The 100,000th second-gen Cayenne was a V8-powered model finished in “pure white”. The SUV will now make the long journey from Porsche’s Leipzig, Germany plant to its new owner in Brazil.
Many questioned Porsche’s decision to delve into the world of SUVs, but that move has been a tremendous financial success. The Cayenne is Porsche’s most popular model by far, and has accounted for well over 50 percent of the automaker’s sales some years. Cayenne sales were up an incredible 74 percent in the United States through the first nine months of the year.
As a result of that success, Porsche is boosting production at the Cayenne’s Leipzig plant.
“Because of the consistently high demand for the Cayenne and Panamera we will be introducing a third production shift in Leipzig at the end of January. With the new production sequence, 500 vehicles on average will be produced each day,” said Wolfgang Leimgruber, Member of the Executive Board of Production and Logistics.
The Leipzig plant, now in its 10th year of production, is expected to produce its 500,000th vehicle later this year.
