Update: Porsche Roxster actually Porsche Cayenne mule

05/27/2008, 7:47 PM

By Drew Johnson

Despite earlier reports, the prototype snapped in these pictures are not a smaller brother to the current Porsche Cayenne – which has been referred to as the Roxster – but is actually the first sight of the icon itself: the new 2011 Porsche Cayenne.

Porsche was first to the market with an SUV model based on the vehicle architecture developed jointly between Volkswagen, Audi and itself, with the original Cayenne being released back in 2002 – one year ahead of the VW Touareg and four years ahead of the Audi Q7.

Porsche has apparently succeeded to pushing VW to speed up development of shared projects – such as the replacement design for the SUV family.

Executives at Porsche hope to launch the new Cayenne by the first half of 2010, however, the second-gen Touareg isn’t due to make an appearance until late 2010 at the earliest. Germany’s Automobilwoche reports that Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking is using his ever-increasing control of VW Group to rush projects that would favor Porsche, even if it disadvantages VW. Audi, meanwhile, isn’t expected to replace its Q7 SUV with a new model until 2013.

Wiedeking made it clear to the VW board in January 2006 that he hopes to speed up development of the Cayenne because of fears of the worsening demand for thirsty SUVs and rising oil prices. The new model will be much more fuel-efficient and will feature a new hybrid model, as well as a diesel, in its revamped lineup.

I hope the high price of gas makes it tank (pun intended).

So now Porsche wants to compete with Toyot Rav4’s? They sure are aiming high. How to dilute a premium brand image… by Porsche.

Oh c’mon, they can’t build Cayennes fast enough and the Q7 is Audi’s biggest seller. It’s not like they’re going to stop building sports cars. And if it tanks- so what? Apparently Porsche is not hurting for cash these days.

BlackX, I think majority of Porsches are leased not owned (first time around), and Boxsters are for Porsche bottom feeders. Gas price matters in this segment.

Does Porsche have anything in the cheap hatchback or rental U-Haul market segments yet? Why are they leaving only the two segments open?

Don’t do this Porsche…I had forgotten you were a compay, which means you care more about the money than how to get it could affect your image. I mean, Porsche already proved that they can make great sporties ( Boxster, Carrera, Cayman…), they already proved they can make super sporties (Carrera GT, GT2…), they already proved that they can make a great at-Off-Road Porsche (Cayenne) … Now what, are they trying to prove they can make a…uhmmmm, vehicle that take you from point A to point B …without taking you fast, nor super fast, not even through bumby roads… THEN WHAT??? Just looking cool? And I’m not even sure about that.

Please listen to a proud poor men’s Porsche owner!!

No one cars what we think on this board. We’re the same bunch that hates the styling of the Corolla and Camry, and look where that got us.

Porsche isn’t stupid. They see the X3 and EX35 selling like crazy and they want in. It’ll sell like crazy. Some secretaries at work looked over my shoulder while I was on this very page and said “Oooh that’s niiiiice!!!!” Case in point.

I think the Cayenne should have been around this size when it was first developed. Could have kept the Porsche light and performance image much better, with out everyone complaining (as much) about how it dilutes the brand.

Xyunya: YEah, every now and then I calm down and try to add some objectivity to the thread. All that jazz (jizz?) about ****masters, sisterfisting, ****ing alley-trannies, it’s all to get a good laugh. HRR, 400, if you’re listening, I’m just ****ing with you. I don’t know you from a hole in the wall – if we ran into each other at a bar I’d gladly buy you a round.

Johnny: the secretaries are all in their 40’s, with some saggy funbags. One of them is OK, but the rest……pass…..HOw’s BC doing? The weather is good these days?

I dislike SUV, and thought the Cayenne has done more harm than good. But SUV drivers are downsizing to smaller SUV in general and I believe this holds true for luxury brands even. This is a logical move for Porsche.

What on earth is Porsche doing? I can no longer respect them despite them producing monsters like the GT3 and GT2 as well as the Carrera GT. But when you start making saloons and Off Roaders…. This is an abomination. However, they still are gonna make tons of money off of this, as they do with the rest of their products

So they are going with the smaller lighter weight vehicle, good for them, now if only they would ditch the V6s for the the boxer engines.

If the engine is not in the mid or back, then they have made a compromise in vehicle design to save money and it will never truly fulfill its heritage. Just like the first gen. While no one can argue its sales success and its profit generation. I still feel a little sad for the company and the person driving a Cayenne when I see one. I wonder how many know they are driving a VW with a $30K premium used to subsidize Porsches’ developent of race cars for doctors.

I don’t feel sad for Porsche at all. The Cayenne turned that company around. If anything I feel sad for the Boxster as that was the extreme compromise so that Porsche could sell more units. The Cayenne has lifted the company and allowed them to continue to do the things that made them great. Porsche RS Spyder project funded by your neigborhood Porsche Cayenne
