Now I'm confused too. Wasn't it what got Porsche into $$ trouble last year? They tried to take over control of VW (using crazy debt/borrowing tried to take over a much bigger VW.) Porsche was unsuccessful & lost billions due to the world financial melt-down. The CEO of the time lost his job and as a result VW bought a portion of Porsche.

Porsche has never been owned by outside sources. While it is true that Porsche and VW have partnered on a number of projects, the Touareg and Cayenne, the 914 (stillborn VW sports car - Porsche had too much invested in it when VW decided to pull the plug on it; Porsche decided to go ahead with it, eventually creating the 914/6 with a true Porsche engine H-6 2.2l). Porsche has also partnered or sold their engineering services to a number of other companies, Mercedes being the first that comes to mind (with the E500/500E sports sedan - the whole engine and suspension was a Porsche design and installed at Porsche), even Harley-Davidson contracted Porsche to design the new water cooled V-rod engine, yup all you Harley riders are powered by a German (Porsche) designed engine!
Porsche and VW have long had a great professional relationship, sharing common parts (relays/electronics/some suspension components, etc.) and engineering to spread out the costs associated with the design and development work, but Porsche has never been "owned" by VWAG. The cross pollination at the board of directors level is another story.

Talk about misinformation! I had been under the impression for years (no, make that decades) that Volkswagen owned Porsche. Based on the news that Porsche is planning to acquire 20 percent of VW, that pretty well dispels the notion that VW is Porsche's parent company. I'm curious, though: prior to Cayanne/Tourag, has there been ANY relationship between VW and Porsche? Shared technology? Common parts? (For example, it was said that the low-end Porsche 914 used a VW engine, and that a common performance enhancement was to replace it with a Porsche powerplant.) Time to dispel myths and get accurate!
