Though reviled by Porsche traditionalists, the Cayenne has sold briskly since its introduction in 2002. The Cayenne helped provide Porsche with the income to stay independent before a questionable takeover bid of VW Group led to its bankruptcy and, ironically, the brand’s purchase by VW Group. Despite that corporate blunder, the Cayenne is selling better than ever, causing Porsche to increase production of the sporty crossover by 10 percent starting in 2012.

Sales of the Cayenne, which was redesigned for 2011, are up 37 percent in the first half of 2011. High demand has resulted in delivery times of as much as 12 months in markets like China.

“We’re now looking into ways we can expand production capacity to be able to serve our customers more quickly,” said Porsche sales chief Bernhard Maier.

The new Cayenne, along with a future small crossover known as the Cajun, is a central element in Porsche’s plan to double sales to 200,000 vehicles by 2018
