Porsche has confirmed that production of its second-ever SUV, a sub- Porsche Cayenne model tentatively referred to as the Porsche Cajun, will take place at its Leipzig, Germany, assembly plant.
The automaker’s supervisory board has approved a new assembly line and paint shop in Leipzig. Groundbreaking on the new facility is set for later this year.
“During the production of the Cayenne and the Panamera, our Leipzig plant has impressively proved that it can produce premium vehicles of highest quality,” said Matthias Müller, chairman of the Porsche AG board of management, in a statement released to members of the media. “The decision in favor of this location is proof of our trust in the skills and qualifications of our Leipzig associates, and at the same time another contribution to the economic advancement of the region.”
The automaker says that the new plant will create around 1,000 jobs in the region.
Few details about the Cajun have been confirmed, with Porsche still referring to the nameplate as a “project designation” and not an official name. The model will be introduced as a 2013 model and will likely debut at the Geneva Motor Show next year.
