Porsche to get Audi-based small SUV?

03/14/2008, 2:09 PM

By paulee

Audi’s Q5 SUV is due to bow at next month’s Beijing auto show, and it could provide a platform for a smaller Porsche SUV, much like the current platform-mates and engine-mates the VW Toureg and Porsche Cayenne. Porsche chairman Wendelin Wiedeking is keen on the idea of reduced costs such a move would bring, and with Porsche’s recent stake bump to over 50 percent from 31 in Volkswagen AG, which encompasses Audi, that is bound to happen. The three newly-appointed Porsche-faithful executives on VW’s supervisory board are also likely to have some say in the matter.

Audi is less enthusiastic about the idea, as the Porsche would likely eat into the sales of their own product, according to Autoweek.

The Q5 will apparently showcase VAG’s new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, dubbed S-tronic in Audi models. The transmission should finds its way into many more Audi models in the near future, as it is capable of handling 405 lb-ft of torque and engine speeds up to 8,500 rpm. The DL500 as it’s known internally, is designed to work with longitudinal engine layouts. It should also be found in the Audi A4 due for a September release.

Porsche needs to stop devaluing the brand and destroying the meaning of the Porsche name. If you want an SUV, buy an SUV, not some crappy overpriced “luxury crossover”.

First the V6 Cayenne, next the diesel Cayenne, now this crappy Tiguan clone…
I think I’ll change my definition from “Porsche fan” to “911, maybe Cayman or Boxster fan”
Speaking of the Cayman/Boxster… If you plan on getting one, get one NOW. The next generation will share it’s platform with the Audi R4. Oh goodie, more crappy clones!
I hope they don’t do the next A5 using the 911 platform or vice-versa… :( (

I don’t think this would be too bad.. As long as it kicks the competitions ass in terms of performance and doesn’t get anything below a V6 it could be cool..

But they should make it really extremely sporty for an SUV.. Something that drives circles around an X5

Oh well who cares Porsche controls VW now. The Unions back Porsche and the Porsche family is 100% behind their chairman now we have to see them fight it out for positions and see who gets cut.

Porsche’s becoming more and more of a for-profit company. Not to say they weren’t in the first place, but they’ve/they’re becoming more and more concerned about the viability of a product and it’s monetary value then actually creating good cars.

This is not what they had in mind when Porsche made the 356. Goes to show how the world is changing.

Lp640- I hope he or the rest of us here wouldn’t know what cum slurping is all about…

Stinky- I doubt they plan on using the A5 chassis for the next 911. But if they do, then all my faith in Porsche will be gone.

You keyboard critic Cayenne haters are goobers. Have you ever driven a Cayenne? Do you do anything but sit in front of your PC and give uneducated opinions on vehicles you know nothing about? When the Cayenne first came out I was one of the haters. I thought Porsche had sold out and lost their way. Then I decided I should give Porsche the benefit of the doubt that they might know what they are doing and I test drove a Turbo for a day. It took me a couple hours to figure out what the Cayenne T was all about but at the end of the day I took it home.

No other car I have driven can do everything the CT does as well as the the Porsche. It’s a swiss army knife. It drives like a sports sedan. Make that a really good sports sedan. It’s like a rally car in the snow. I can throw the dog and the mountain bike in it and head off road to the trails. Even at 5200lbs + it can show taillights to almost everything I meet at a stoplight. It can tow my car to the track. And, it has never been in the shop for anything but sched maintenance. Shocker! I wasn’t in love with the looks but after I really spent some time looking over the exterior design I started to get it and I think it looks really cool. In fact as ugly as everyone says it is online I have yet had anyone say anything but how pretty it is. I get compliments on it all the time. Chicks dig it. My car guy buddies are always wanting to drive it. What else can I say? It’s not perfect. I think the transmission is a little funky and the ergos could use improvement but overall the flaws are easily overlooked when you stop on the gas pedal. I think the Rockster would be a great addition to the line up if it is anything like the Cayenne. Unfortunately in a real world where practicality often trumps performance Porsche cannot survive on Sports cars alone. If they can sell a few practical cars to keep the sports car alive then so be it.
