In order to fuel its quest to nearly double its global sales by 2018, Porsche says it will hire 300 new engineers during 2012. Porsche hired about 300 engineers in 2011 and says it plans to create about 1,000 new jobs per year until 2018.

“We are growing at a tremendous pace. We hired more than 300 engineers last year over and above replacing people who left as part of normal staff turnover,” said Wolfgang Hatz, head of Porsche’s R&D.

Hatz notes that the 300 new hires will increase Porsche’s “core staff by nearly 10 percent across all departments.” Porsche has about 3,500 employees at its Weissach development center and employs a total of 13,000 workers worldwide.

In addition to the new engineering positions, Porsche says it will also create about 1,000 new jobs every year until 2018 as part of its plan to increase worldwide sales to 200,000 units. Porsche expects global sales to total 115,000 units for 2011, up from 97,000 in 2010.

Porsche will continue to invest heavily in new models over that same period, with the German automaker planning to spend about 10 percent of total revenue on R&D – well above the industry average of 5-6 percent. Porsche will launch a new version of its Boxster this year, followed by the 918 Spyder, Cajun SUV and new Cayman in 2013.
