Porsche Cars North America, seeking to emulate its United Kingdom counterpart, is reportedly planning to move its offices across Atlanta to a former Ford Motor Company assembly plant near the city’s airport.

Currently located in the suburban Atlanta city of Sandy Springs, Georgia, Porsche won’t go far if it buys the former Ford plant in Hapeville, located just outside of Hartsfield-Atlanta International Airport. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Porsche plans to build a race track on the site that it would use both to develop new products and to train drivers who sign up for its courses. A closed course would mirror Porsche’s recent Silverstone project in the U.K., which opened about three years ago adjacent to the company’s regional office.

The land was the site of a Ford Motor Company assembly plant, which most recently built the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. Although it was considered one of the most efficient plants in North America at the time of its closure, Ford deemed the plant unnecessary for its regional operations.

An announcement from Porsche is expected tomorrow. The move would take several years, which could give Porsche enough time to run out its lease in the Sandy Springs office building where it currently operates.
