Porsche, Toyota, Hyundai shine in quality survey

06/07/2006, 6:46 PM

By admin

Toyota dominated the J.D. Power and Associates initial quality rankings with the top score in 11 of 19 segments. Meanwhile, Porsche had the fewest overall number of problems for any automaker. Porsche had 91 problems per 100 vehicles, compared to the industry average of 124. The 2006 scores and not comparable to those of previous years because the new survey counts perceived design flaws rather than actual defects only. Had the survey used the old methodology, Lexus would have ranked above Porsche with the fewest “problems.” Hyundai came in number three overall with 102 problems. A BMW spokesperson blamed the company’s poor ranking — below Mercedes — on the amount of complex technology in its car. For a list of the top quality rankings and the top vehicles, read on…

The Pontiac Grand Prix is on the list because the owners were too old to see any of the faults

“perceived design flaws” what the hell does that mean?

Does that mean that If I think the HVAC vents on the dash of my new car should been designed round in shape, but they are square, its counts as a “perceived design flaw”?

Why would JDP&A allow people to subjectively lable something as a flaw, rather than count actual defects? This list is worthless as far as QUALITY rankings go.

This is the second time JD Power has broadened what its IQS measures. Adding “design quality” to “defects” muddies the water, because now it’s not possible to know what a score represents. It would be better to have two separate scores.

The biggest problem is that your average person hearing “scored lowest in JD Power” will assume that the car will be the most reliable.

It’s also important to pay attention to the absolute differences. The best average one problem per car and the worst two problems per car. So at most we’re talking about one problem per car.

But trim the outliers, and you’ll find that most brands fall within a 0.4 problem range. Focusing on the ranking distracts attention from the small size of the absolute differences.

Quoting CNN article: ‘For example, BMW vehicles have among the fewest defects and malfunctions, along with Toyota,” said Ivers. “But BMW approaches controls and displays in a way that creates some problems for customers, leading to more design-related problems overall than Toyota incurs.” ‘

Also, its unfair to compare smaller production companies like Porsche to Ford, GM, and Toyota where if a mistake is made on the assembly line, more cars will be affected.

Although, the Land Rover does seem correct haha. The LR3, has been taken back to the dealer countless times for a gas tank recall, a moon roof leak, electronics going haywire, etc. but to thier credit, once a problem is fixed, it stays fixed, and the service is great. The car is serviced quickly, a loaner will be given if needed, and its been of no charge. Then again, the LR3 has only been in production for 2 years.

One american made car in the list of “highest ranked vehicles”, and the grand prix’s reliability is its only positive trait, otherwise its undesirable. that’s very telling if you ask me. out of the top 10 brands on that list, only 2 were american, and i dont even trust that gmc and cadillac should be on there, as they are both notoriously unreliable. another telling statistic

I find it interesting that 91% porsche cars suffer from problems. the concurrence though has a much more serious problem: they get back more faulty cars than they produce: 124%!

nicola, it is the number of problmes per 100 cars. It doesn’t mean every car has only one problem!!! Use your head!!
Btw, i do find the study quite interesting, but not very coherent. I mean, a company should more or less have the same ranking in terms of reliability for its brands, like Toyota & Lexus, Acura & Honda. But look at Audi and VW. Something is not right.
And Hyundai’s ranking really comes as a surprise to me.

Remember the survey captures is only initial quality – 90 days. What you get in first 90 days is : 1)defects 2) complaints from ppl who can’t figure out the NAV, the buttons, etc. The survey says nothing on how DURABLE these cars are.

Are the responses taking into account dealer service also? The reason I ask is because a friend of mine has a Hyundai Sonata. The level of service he receives from the dealer far surpasses (by quite a margin) what I get from my Acura dealer for my TL. His Sonata has been 100% troublefree and thanks to the dealer, he is now a Hyundai customer for life. This could be the big difference between VW and Audi. As a former VW owner, I can remember the atrocious service the VW dealers provided, taking several trips to fix one minor thing.

Lets just combine as much information as we can into a single number so that lazy average people won’t have to look past a single number to figure out what car to buy.

That is what this study tell me. It tells me more about how J.D. Power percives american consumers then how the initial quality of vehicles sold in the US are.

This type of survey is obviously not comprehensive but it is not all bad either. Since buying a new car is often accompanied by certain emotions, most people are going to have a higher opinion of their new car during the first 90 days or so of ownership. True, the very best of cars will continue to provide a high level of satisfaction long after that and there are studies aplenty for longer periods too (consumer reports buyers guide is one), but it seems to me that in order for a cars shortcomings to create dissatisfaciton enough for a negative comment during that 90 day period, well, it’s going to have to be a pretty significant problem to overcome the intiial ‘euphoria’ of purchase.
I find the information worthwhile and interesting, but not a final word in deciding what car I am going to buy next.
And you fools who insist on Bashing President Bush at every breath and keystroke, get a life, your comments betray you as barely able to tie your own shoes let alone be a useful participant in society.

Initial quality doesn`t seem to be very important. I¨ve got a Daihatsu 1994 with 185,000KMH and nothing bad have ever happened to it. Its perfect. And i had a hyundai Accent 2004 and to tell the truth. Its the worst car i`ve ever had in my life. It lacks in quality. But Yeah. At 20km it was good. at 70,000km Have had like diferent problems. From the Antenna to the engine.
