Porsche launches augmented reality for repair technicians

Techs are connected to remote experts via smartglasses, reducing service times by up to 40 percent.

Porsche has launched an augmented reality system for dealership repair technicians across the country.

Known as Tech Live Look, the technology uses smartglasses and augmented reality to connect US technicians to remote experts. From hundreds of miles away, the Atlanta-based support team can see what the technician is seeing and provide feedback. Step-by-step bulletins or schematic drawings can also be projected directly onto the smartglasses display.

Previously, communication between front-line service technicians and PCNA experts could require multiple text messages, phone calls, photos and on-site visits to help diagnose and fix a problem.

The company says the AR system can help reduce service times by up to 40 percent. Expert supervision is also presumably aimed at reducing the chance of making mistakes.

The system will begin going live at 189 US dealers starting this week.
