The rising cost of gasoline in the United States is an issue we’ve covered a lot at Leftlane, because it’s something that affects almost all of us. This particular Associated Press photo pretty much speaks for itself. It shows the price of high octane gas at a gas station in Beverly Hills on Thursday. Meanwhile, AAA is reporting that prices could be driven even higher in the coming weeks.

The referenced article is incorrect. The most recent “bump” in the Mid Atl/NE is due to the “blow”, near Richmond, VA of Plantation’s pipeline. Whilst most of the affected product was Jet, there was much reshuffling of product…

$4 a gallon? That’s nothing compared to the $6.732 per gallin we pay here in Europe.
98 octane = €1.442 per Litre.

Note: That’s premium FULL SERVICE gas (click on the link and read the caption). Who knows they add in Beverly Hills for “full service.” I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s at least .50 cents, so that picture is misleading.

this is what you get when you “elect” through stolen elections and weak opposition (yes, i mean democrats) a corporatist government that is little more than a false front for major corporate cartels like Energy and Insurance.
“rollerball,” anyone?
don’t ever think that your vote doesn’t count. make sure you participate in the system, or $4/gallon gas is just the beginning, folks. how about metered internet usage? that one’s already coming – and they’re already routing all your packet requests to the NSA.
and all i wanted to do was have talk talking about cars, dammit.

I like the rollerbal reference. I hope this makes all the idiots who don’t NEED the size/space/power of SUVs and pickups realize just how pointless their “trucks” are.

Man, I am a student in LA and I am thinking twice about driving into hollywood this afternoon. I only budget about $40/month in gas. Too bad there are plenty of people around here that drive 8mpg cars so they couldn’t care less about the price of gas.

Jim in LA – When are you going to “move on” from the stolen election mantra? Get over it. Be careful how you respond, though, the NSA might come knocking on your door!
Adam – As I said the other day, this is America. People can buy whatever they want; this is a free country. If people can afford the gas, they are free to buy SUVs and trucks. It’s none of your business what other people buy.

1) Stolen election? I thought it was the dems who tried to have the courts give them the election first…..
2) what is with all the spammers I have been seeing lately?
*the following is a general statement to the “my enviro-yuppie worldview is better than you” people.
3) Who the hell are you to tell me what I can or cannot drive, to tell me what I do or do not need? Let’s say that I use my truck once every two years to haul a sofa or a TV home from the store without having to pay delivery…does that count as acceptable in your eyes? Let’s say I go camping/off-roading ~20 times per summer…your ignorant closed minded self doesn’t know that when I pass you on the street.
Bottom line, each and every american has the right to chose what vehicle to drive as they see fit. Your Prius won’t hold 30 bags of Quickrete, a couple dozen sheets of plywood, or a yard of river rock… and that is just ONE summer project.
You are not better than me. Your choices, although different, are not the one and only end-all decision for the population. Get over yourselves… or is this one of those “I fully support freedom of speech as long as I agree with what you have to say”

I am not telling you what you can or can’t drive, but I am calling you a jerk. There is no need for a truck or SUV for commuting. Period. If you need luxury, buy a 3 Series. If you need space, buy a wagon. If you need power, buy a sports car, hell the the z06 gets 29 MPG on the highway. I am not saying that SUVs are the only problem and the reason that gas prices are so high, or why we are letting Americans get killed in Iraq, but is sure is hell isn’t helping anything.

If you have three kids and a Sea Ray, then maybe you can justify purchasing a Tahoe over an Outback. But I see far too many people driving their gas hogs BY THEMSELVES. And maybe they do visit the Home Depot every weekend. But why not just take the train to work or carpool or buy a smaller car for commuting? Perhaps that’s presumptuous, because I don’t know the financial status of people with SUVs. I’m just suggesting alternative ways of transportation. Interestingly enough, my college owns both Priuses (Prii?) and Excursions. The Excursions are used to haul people on camping trips AND tow canoes WITH backpacks on top. I have no problem with that. You can’t do that with a Prius. And the Europeans are right. This is truly nothing relative to the rest of the world. We should be so lucky.

When someone is driving an $65,000 Escalade, they do not get any pitty. If they can aford that car, they have enough money that I can make a judgement on their choice in vehicle. And you should as well. There is a diffenece in a Silverado and an Escalde. NO one uses and Escalade for work. If they do, it is futher proff that they are idiots.

Why wouldn’t they? For one, it is the same platform, same interior volume… but more engine! If he/she has the money, needs the room, and prefers more power and chrome and leather, more power to them.
You are still missing the point. Even if they do not use the Escalade for work, he or she still has the freedom to make the decision to purchase the vehicle that he or she chooses.
I do not demand you drive a truck or an SUV, nor should you attempt to demand I (or anyone else, rich or poor) drive a hybrid or econobox. See… back to that whole freedom thing again. This MUST be one of those “I am 100% for freedom of speech so long as I agree with what you have to say…” things

um, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the election NOT being hijacked…..
interestingly enough, with the movement towards smaller, more efficient vehicles, the outcast vehicles of the SUV Class of 1996-2004 will gravitate towards cheap transportation for the lower class….the very folks who can’t afford $90 fill-ups….

Oh, what it must be like to wake up and be Jim in LA everyday (or just about any lib)… Doom and gloom, this country sucks, the war sucks, the economy sucks… You fail to see the positive in anything and just listen to whatever the Clinton News Network has to say.
We couldn’t have fought WWII today with what this country’s become because of people like you and the agenda-driven media. Sad, but at least I can see the positives that this country brings to the world, unlike you.

As the price of gas rises it becomes a tax on lifestyle. Drive less, pay less. Drive something which consumes less, pay less. Pretty simple formula.
Now go out and buy more gas guzzling cars and drive ‘em around so you can give me an even better return on my energy stocks!

People are dying in Iraq so you can drive your SUVs to the grocery store. Those who waste gas by driving hulking, conspicuous consumption vehicles – even if they can afford it – are raising the price of gasoline for EVERYONE in this country.
It’s obvious that the age old phenomenon of supply and demand is raising the price of gas and not greedy oil executives. If you don’t believe this then consider how the price of diesel is almost completely non-volatile when compared to gasoline. Why? Because in this country 98% of diesel is used by commercial trucks which have no “seasons” of use like consumer gasoline users….
If you are driving a gasoline powered vehicle that gets under 20mpg then you need to face up to the fact that you ARE a large part of the problem of escalating gas prices in this country. You’d better be prepared to not only continue paying out the butt to fuel up your obese behemouth SUVs (while helping to fund terrorism and line the pockets of the big oil execs through your excessive, greedy, wasteful ways) but suffer increasing criticism from those of us who understand reality and know who is really to blame for the high price of gasoline – you the arrogant, American consumer.
