Because the land that they currently have leases on isn’t NEARLY as efficient to pull from as other sources are. If your goal is to reduce costs it’d be pretty stupid to go after the expensive oil first when there’s billions of barrels of much cheaper stuff to get.

Because they haven’t been allowed to. They HAVE significantly expanded the capacity of the refineries that do exist though.

Because oil is sold on the International market. It’s a commodity. They BOUGHT it from Alaska, they have the right to sell it to whomever they want. Don’t like it have the contracts changed.

The market is full of speculation. There are many thousands of investors out there inflating the price because they know AS LONG AS THE STATUS QUO IS MAINTAINED, prices will continue to rise. Even the THREAT of increased supply can significantly effec the price — we see that after any announcement regarding natural disasters, pipeline issues, refinery shutdowns, etc. The market reacts to SPECULATION not any rational news. Just as we know that even the threat of increased demand continues to drive the price up. It doesn’t matter that the demand isn’t necessarily there — in fact, refineries are slowing down production because we’re producing domestic gasoline faster than we’re burning it — all that matters is that someone, somewhere, THINKS it’s going to go up.

1> Because it’s the Oil RESERVE for a reason. It’s not kept there for political points when gas prices are high. It’s kept there for NATIONAL SECURITY.
2> As a matter of fact, he DID release some oil — SIX TIMES since he took his presidency. Oil’s only been released from the Reserve 12 times EVER, 6 of which was in Bush’s term.
3> The oil kept in reserve is very low quality. It’s good enough for emergencies, but it’s not something you want to flood the market with on a regular basis.

I say if we are not going to scorch the earth in Iraq the way we should, then let Iran get the nukes they crave and Israel and Iran can scorch the whole damn place for us and get rid of the problem once and for all. The bottom line is this, the government makes, no, steals trillions off of its citizens in the form of taxes and a lot of that has to do with the auto industry. The government spending my money on anything like this gets my vote. It’s one of the few things they do with my money that I like as opposed to pissing it down some worthless poor persons throat only to have them buy rims and a car stereo with it.

The prez is like the head of a head of a large company. It’s amazing that a guy whose resume consists of writing a book and chanting “we can” would ever be considered for the role, because his resume would be in the trash if he applied for the job. Maybe you’d forward it to the PR department, but no senior staff.

Then again there wasn’t one candidate in either party whose resume I’d proudly consider, but at least everyone else had more crap on their resume.

At the same time I think the price per barrel is inflated, but I don’t think the Obama or McCain camp can control it.

Fatties are the most efficient producers of biofuels we have. You can probably get 3 barrels of crude out of their bodies for the cost of 14 boxes of twinkies (washed down with a Diet Coke, of course)

I thought the Iraq war was costing us nearly a trillion a year, not this measly billion stuff. I’ve seen figures that state the war in Iraq spends $280 million PER DAY.

Same with this $300M for batteries. $300M isn’t going to make a company that had no interest in developing the technology suddenly decide to develop it.

How about we pull our troops out of Iraq, therewith save $150 billion a year, and offer 1/3 of that, or $50 Billion cash, to whichever company produces a workable alternative energy solution which allows us to become energy independent within 5 years.

For a large company, $300 mill isn’t squat. $50 billion cash talks, plus we’d save money, save lives, create jobs at home, stop paying terrorists to kill us, and spur innovation.
