Prius sales top 500k; more details on tax credits

Toyota announced this week that sales of its Prius compact car hit 504,700 units worldwide at the end of April. The Prius was first introduced in 1997. Earlier this week, we reported that Toyota would likely announce it has sold 60,000 hybrids this year, which would spell an end to tax incentives for buyers of the cars. Today, the official announcement came, and a date was set for an end to the tax credits. Prius buyers have until September 30th to qualify for the $3,150 credit. After that date, the incentive will be cut to $1575 for the next 6 months, and then drop to $787 before being discontinued entirely.

If I was a betting man, I’d bet that the tax credit will be extended. There’s already quite a bit of talk about doing this. I think Bush has requested it.

I’m going to start collecting reliability data on the Prius at http://www.truedelta.com/reliability.php this month.

Many people seem to wonder how reliable hybrids are. This research will provide a clear comparison.

The site currently provides price comparisons on the Prius, including the tax credit.
