Prodrive developing Active Toe Control

03/13/2008, 3:58 PM

By Drew Johnson

Prodrive — a Motorsport and vehicle technology specialist — has announced that it is developing a new “vehicle dynamics system that actively adjusts toe angle to improve vehicle handling.” The system — dubbed Active Toe Control — works with front-wheel drive vehicles that use a twist beam rear axle.

The system can adjust a vehicle’s rear toe — meaning the angles of the rear tires — for better handling in certain driving situations. For example, toe-out is better suited for low speed handling while toe-in is better for high speeds and emergency maneuvers. Prodrive’s system would be able to adjust on the fly to changing driving conditions.

A typical vehicle equipped with a twist beam rear axle has a static toe position and can’t adjust to varying conditions.

While the system might sound complicated, Prodrive is actually promoting its Active Toe Control system as a cost effective alternative to a more expensive multi link setup. “Active Toe Control, fitted to an existing twist beam axle, can give many of the dynamic benefits of a multi-link system, but at less than half the cost,” says Prodrive.

But it might be a while before Prodrive’s Active Toe Control is actually fitted to a production vehicle as the company is still looking for partner to further develop the system.

Prodrive, why don’t you focus on trying to get a good winning streak on the C6-R. Probably won’t happen.
About this “active toe” system. Twist beam rear suspension? Didn’t know you could even adjust toe on that.

Sounds pretty interesting. Much more interesting than Karma making fake engine sounds, trying to be something that it’s not. Just another amazing thing from Prodrive…

Between all the junk options and the EPA cramming rules down our throat no wonder car financing is now 7 years.

India has the right idea with the Nano.

I’ve got a better idea than Prodrive’s: just eliminate FWD.

Sounds cool, but still seems overly complicated. Like Tien suspension.

What Tien suspension is over complicated? The EDS system is great. I wish they made one for my A4.

Kill the twist beam already.

manhertm, I’m talking about the electronicly controlled suspension. Such as how this prodrive makes something electronic that doesn’t need to be. It’s just my preference. The way I see it, it’s less that can go wrong.

Hmm… interesting idea, but will it kill the experience of the driver RE: feel of the road?
