Subaru of America announced today that Takeshi Tachimori will take over as the CEO of the Japanese automaker’s North American operations.

Tachimori moves to the new position from Japan, where he was a vice president at Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries and the chief general manager of the automaker’s product and portfolio planning division. Tachimori is credited with leading development of the current Legacy sedan and Outback tall wagon, two models heavily responsible for Subaru’s massively increased U.S. sales.

It won’t be the first stint in North America for Tachimori. The executive was Subaru’s North American manager of quality assurance in the early 1990s.

Tachimori replaces Yoshio Hasunuma, who will return to Japan to be the corporate executive vice president of North American sales and marketing in the company’s home country.
