Production Dodge Challenger to debut in 12 months

02/15/2007, 3:27 PM

By admin

Chrysler will unveil the production version of the 2009 Dodge Challenger 356 days from today (Feb 15). It will be unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2008, the company said today.

First revealed as a concept vehicle at the North American International (Detroit) Auto Show in 2006, Chrysler Group announced this past summer that the 2008 Dodge Challenger would be going into production next year.

To the delight of Canada, the Chrysler Group announced at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto that the Challenger will be built at the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant. The Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum are also assembled in Brampton.

Won’t Chrysler be an orphan by then? A broke orphan no less. They should have introduced this by now, it’s been a long time considering they are not even developing a chassis or powertrain for it…same goes for GM & the Camaro. Too little, too late IMO. I do think it will be a nice ride, but only if it’s priced the same as a Mustang model for model.

BTW…it’s 356 days to the SHOW…just for those whose reading comprehension is a little below their grade level…

I don’t know.. I think I rather see 1000 Mustangs than 500 Mustangs and 500 Challengers if the Challenger looks much like the concept. I’m not a big Mustang fan, but the Challenger concept harps back to the original far too much; it’s almost a carbon copy (again, no pun intended). Honestly, I think the Camaro puts both vehicles’ designs to shame, but I’ve always been a huge Camaro fan.

The Camaro isn’t a carbon copy of the original. Compare all four side by side: first gen Camaro, Camaro concept, ’70s Challenger, and Challenger concept. You’ll see what I mean. Camaro looks much more modern than the Challenger; the only modern pieces of the Challenger I see are the headlights (not even sure if those are production ready anyway) and interior. Even the damn engine has the same name!

The camaro has more of a distinct look, it has the same over all shape reminiscent to the first generation, but its distinctively different. The Chrysler took the other approach with the challenger, they just remade the old car. Probably why so many people love it, it looks nearly exactly like the old one! I have to give GM more props for the camaro being I think more effort went into it. I like the challenger though. Visuals are all a matter of opinion, and mine is the camaro is better.

The Camaro is a much better “retro”. It’s a modern design with retro cues. Great looking car. The Challenger is cleaned up ‘71 model, nothing more. Same thing Ford did with the GT. I’m not saying they’re not good looking cars, they’re just design cop-outs.

The pivotal issue that makes the Challenger the winner of the Challenger Vs Camaro question is the heritage of the Camaro. The Camaro has always been the holy grail of the dirtiest, sorriest, stupidest, mullet wearing white trash rednecks that you can find in your local trailer park. If those are the people you feel comfortable with, and you can give up the meth, and hold down a job long enough…you might actually be able to afford a new Camaro once they are 12 years old. The Challenger is gonna enter the market without all that enourmously negative legacy attached to the name.

Camaro and Challenger are hard to compare when you think of it. Performance-wise, there’s going to be a big rivalry between these 2 cars. But the style of them is actually incredibly different. People set on the classic look will go with the Challenger. Camaro is more a meld of retro influences and modern design. Two different tastes. I would drive both, perhaps the Camaro more than the Challenger.

It’s too bad the rest of the new vehicles from Dodge/Chrysler are so bland.

I think the Camaro and the Challenger are both very good looking cars. I have a personal preference for the Camaro, but thats just me. The thing that sets the two apart is going to be their sticker prices. I have a feeling the Challenger being an LX car will be placed a little further up market than the Camaro, and I know GM is going to try to keep the sticker down to compete directly with the Mustang. There is no way a Challenger with a Hemi is going to stick for anything less than $30k.

For those of you complaining about the Challenger being too much like the old one as opposed to an evolved retro design. Let’s not forget that this is a low volume special edition, where as the Camaro is being built to compete with the Mustang. Based on that information I would say that the Challenger will probably be more expensive too. This is kind of inbetween the Silver Slugger (http://www.popularhotrodding.com/features/0504phr_1967_ford_mustang_gt_r_code/) and the new retro vehicles.

Despite the protests from the loyal most of us would accept that the US manufacturers products are not the equal of their Japanese-based competition. Presumably national pride is one reason why they still sell as many as they do.

It seems a really bad move to give foreign workers the job of building a halo model while the Japanese competition employ more and more Americans and emphasise that decision by running in American racing series.

I think when the dust settles the mustang will still be king. This car is really nice but it’ll be too expensive and probably handle like complete crap. It has no chance to beat the mustang in sales which is why its not even trying. The Camaro will handle great thanks to the Australian platform, and have plenty of power, but price will be an issue. They’ll have the bragging rights but in the end it doesnt matter if people cant afford it.

I think Ford nailed it with the mustang design. Its gonna be hard to take the crown from them. Its at a price/performance/looks sweet spot. A compromise between all 3.
