I think they should've let it be. If I wanted to pay a little extra for better (yet not actually fast) compact economy car, I'd just get a Civic. Be safer, and get better gas milage too. Also got that 140 HP i-VTEC engine in a light package.

Fiesta ST 2568lbs in weight, 2 litre N/A 147bhp

129mph top speed, 0-60 is 7.9 secs

That's more Yaris-sized and it returns 38mpg (combined)

"As for those that ask why anyone would spend more money on a sportier small car… do you remember the VW GTI?"

The new GTI won me over not due to its performance but the overall attractive style.

Not bad, if Toyota doesn't overprice it.

130~hp in a Yaris should give it some 'oomph', without compromising much of the fuel-efficiency that is it's selling point.

The GTI being the sportier, 'hot-hatch' version of the original Rabbit (which, in the 1980's, was a bare-bones econo-box).

They added rear disc brakes too. I applaud Toyota for the effort. Economy car buyers should have the choice to get some added performance too.

The Fit (Jazz) as sold in Europe has as its only real fault a terribly overfirm ride that is fidgetty and Jiggly at town speeds over typical city terrain. The ride of teh Yaris is more mature. This will be agreat little toy for zipping up and down the hills in Silverlake and Los Feliz. It is also a 3 door unly the unsporty Fit's 5 door styling

If Toyota would bring this to the US I might buy it over the other new subcompacts. Otherwise I would get a Fit.

yeah I guess it would ss... but if they are still at a similar price as they are now available with the 4 cylinder, then it will still compete with this car, AND it will have a bigger engine to compete with other cars.
Even though this car is a paperweight (2300~ibs) it still has trouble climbing hills and the interior is nice and fairly spacy but it isn't as functional as I would like it to be.

*yawn*... I wouldn't see why they wouldn't bring this over the to US, it would probably appeal to plenty of teens. Would it be because it would conflict with Scions Xa and Xb, which are also compact cars that are sometimes thought of as performance orientated (though they truley aren't)?

ss: I provided those three models as examples of what are available, there are many other vehicles (even japanese and korean) also available at this (estimated) price, which may be a lot more vehicle for the $.

besides, this is for europe and NOT the USA, so it doesn't really matter in that regard anyways!

infact this past weekend i went test drivng with my friend who is looking for a car in this segment. the rabbit has 150hp but weights 600lbs more then the Fit and Yaris and only gets 22mpg city. VW really missed the boat on this one, WAAAY to heavy. The compass and caliber are OK at best. The ride was not so good. You would be surpised at how big the Yaris is inside, in fact the Yaris (and Fit) is quicker to 60 then the Rabbit. This yaris TS has nearly the same power to weight ratio as the GTI YARIS -2300/130= 17.7 GTI 3200/200hp = 16.0

at 16k you are also getting into the price range of Compass, Caliber, Rabbit, and a lot of other c-segment vehicles with a LOT more power and a LOT more room, with only minimal mpg losses.
