Q6? Will Audi join the crossover-coupe fold?

09/29/2006, 9:52 AM

Audi is planning a crossover-coupe to rival the much-rumored BMW X6, according to Germany’s Auto Zeitung magazine. BMW has essentially acknowledged plans for the X6, which could be unveiled in concept form in the coming months. Audi’s vehicle will bear the Q6 badge, according to the report. It’s unclear when — if ever — such a vehicle be show.

What exactly is a crossover-coupe? The Volkswagen Concept A is probably the closest vehicle to the X6 or Q6 we’ve seen. These vehicles could come as two- or four-door. While VW doesn’t plan to build the Concept A, it provides a glimpse of this emerging segment. Many observers wonder if a market for such a vehicle exists, but BMW seems convinced one does. Two door SUVs have in general been failures. I just don’t see this working.

I don’t get this segment. A crossover coupe, it will handle like an SUV and have the hauling capacity of a coupe.

I think this stuff is a not so good idea. I want my SUVs somewhat large, and my coupes low and sporty.

Mini SUVs though like the Tiguan, possible X1, could be great.

After the CLS they want to apply the coupe concept to everything. They must be desperate to create new vehicle classes…

I like the CLS a lot, but in reality, how well is it selling?
