Orders have already been placed for all 400 Audi R8s destined for the U.K. market, according to Britain’s Channel 4. Deliveries won’t begin until spring 2007, but already there’s a fifty-person waiting list in case any of the 400 customers decide to cancel.
So far, there has been no word on U.S. sales figures, but we wouldn’t be surprised to hear similar news out of Audi of America in the near future. The R8 has a 420 horsepower V8 powerplant from the RS4 and uses the mid-engine Lamborghini Gallardo platform. It costs around $100,000 in the United States and £77,000 in the U.K.

I still want to see it without that rediculous carbon fiber panel on the sides. Just doesn’t look right with it.

Yup, the R8 has entered my rotating Top 5 list. Also on the list is the Ferrari 599, Bentley Continental GT, Eva Longoria, Brittany Snow…oh wait, I meant to be listing cars. Sorry.
Um, BMW 540i (in black) and that crazy Alfa 8C. That pretty much takes care of the top 5.
Oh yeah, I think the funky carbon panel on the side can be optioned out to body-color. Might be wrong on that, though.

I’m not sure why you guys still refer to $100K cars as expensive. If you drive around northern San Diego or Irvine, you’ll see plenty of more expensive cars on the street. 400 units of a car in that class would be sold out in a day.

Yeah, really, 100k is cheap for a 400 unit production. Look at how many Continental GT’s there are and those’ll run you 165k. Something like 4-5000 in the states alone.

well here in venezuela 100k is a **** load of money besides i know for sure if we get a car like that here it will cost easly 200k 250k, im buying right now a simple mazda 6 and it cost me 35k $ i know in usa i can get a TL for that money or maybe a series 3 or audi a4 or something a lot better than the 4cil 2.3l mazda 6 but hey we pay 0.040 per gallon of gas
anyway anyone paying 100k for a car has money maybe not rich bastard but has lots of money

That R8 is nice, but the look will date very fast. I wouldn’t pay 100k for it.

Wonder why LLN isnt reporting the Audi recall that was announced a few days ago. Nary a recall from Ford or GM makes it past without being listed here.

It is one sexy beast, but for the cash, I’d pass. I’d also rather have a porsche or just keep saving and pick up an F430. If you already have the 100k, whats a few more bucks. I do like the lines of the R8, and I’m sure it’s a hoot to drive. But it’s lacking in the history and heritage of Porsche or Ferrari. I think part of spending that kinda cash is to get “into the club”. And who wants to spend 100k to hang with A4 drivers?

Audi has been manufacturing cars since 1901 and its racing heritage goes back to the Auto Union GP cars of the 1930s so its hardly lacking “history and heritage” even compared to the likes of Porsche or Ferrari. I hope the people who buy these cars get them because they appreciate them and not because they are snobs or poseurs who want to “get into the club”

Enjoy your Audi Hal. It’s not for everyone, but certainly is for you. Cheers. I’d still rather have a sheild or horse on the nose of my dream ride than 4 rings. Opinions vary. Audi race cars ARE cool. R8s dominace, R10s Monster TDI, I can appreciate these achievments. But at the end of the day, to me, the production cars from Audi lack soul. Porsche and Ferrari have it in spades.

I’m going to side with Hal here, even though I drool over the 599. You see, I think a lot of newly-rich people tend to be drawn towards Porsche and Ferrari simply because of the name. Not the racing history. They just want to tell people that’s what they drive and be seen in one. Heck, who wouldn’t? But the Audi R8 is a little more discerning. I bet the first car that Joe Blow will buy after winning the lottery is a Ferrari or Porsche. Sure, he doesn’t know anything about them, but heck, he’s heard of ‘em! Even though the R8 is generating a lot of interest in the car world, it will never have the name recognition of the other marques. Which is just as well, and leaves the car to appreciated by people that simple see it as a fantastic and beautiful machine, regardless of the decal.

Ironpony.. “and who wants to spend 100k to hang with A4 drivers”
what the hell?
so you mean to tell me that someone who buys an SL65 AMG for 180K is just buying it to hang with a C230 driver? Or someone bought the 125K Z8 to hang with a 325i? Or even if someone bought the Nissan GT-R so they could rumble with a Versa? Thats the stupidest comment ive heard in a while.. think next time

I mean to tell you Audi is not a supercar marque. You’ll never convince me an Audi is a better product, or in some way a superior vehicle than a Porsche or Ferrari product. It’s great if you like ‘em, some one has to. Hmmm… an A4 driver I wouldn’t hang out with, go figure he’s the one with his panties in a twist.

I’m an equal-opportunity lover of all of these cars we’re discussing, especially the Ferrari 599. Guess I’m basically an A4 driver too (even though it’s really a Passat.)
That said, I don’t think the R8 is superior to any of the Ferrari’s. Not in the same price category. But the GT3 and the R8 are direct competitors. And that’s all they are; competitors. Once you’re spending $100K on a car, just get the one the illicits emotion in YOU and dont’ care what others think.

I think the R8 is pretty awesome. My dad has an S4 and its pretty cool but it’s too damn heavy. This thing better be a light weight, or at least at a reasonable weight.

Clearly the whole point of buying a R8 is almost completely different from a F430 which goes head to head with the Gallardo. The R8 is much more of a real life abusable, hopefully more reliable toy than a Ferrari. While you probably won’t appeal to the Ferrari crowd in a R8, there are plenty others who can respect your ride for what it is, that is if you still need the ego boost while being different.

ironpony42, an Audi may not be superior to a Porsche but they are generally built better than Ferraris. If you’ve owned both a Ferrari and an Audi, you’ll certainly agree. Though somehow I have a feeling you’ll think any car is superior simply because it is more expensive.
