Quite, Deanster. I could understand why a V9 or V11 would be unbalanced (presumably that's why I've never heard of such a thing), but why would a V10 be, if it has 2 banks of 5, one from each bank firing at the same time?

JagXJS, what you say does seem to be true, as the first line of wikipedia states "The V10 configuration is not an inherently balanced design like a straight-6 or V12. It can be balanced with crankshaft counterweights as an odd firing 90 degree V engine (BMW M5, Dodge Viper). It can be balanced with a balance shaft as an even firing 72 degree engine, or with a split crankshaft journal 90 degree V angle (Lamborghini Gallardo, Ford 6.8 V10)."

But like Deanster, I don't know WHY this is the case, and the wiki doesn't mention that... Surely if there are an even nuber of cylinders, and one is firing from each bank at the same time, it IS balanced? I'm intrigued now...

^ Thanks, well stated. But, why cant each of the five cylinders per side fire against an opposing cylinder? What's the difference other than one less cylinder duo firing?

V-12's are much better balanced because the firing order of each bank offsets the other. This reduces vibrations and the need for counter-balance shafts, harmonic dampners, and various other vibration reducing devices. My V-12 runs smooth as a turbine. If you could not hear it, you would never know the car was running. Many V-10's have offset crankpins or really strange firing orders to attempt to reduce odd vibrations. An engine such as my XJ-S's V-12 has a sensible firing order of 1A-6B-5A-2B-3A-4B-6A-1B-2A-5B-5A-3B. Simply put, it is like two inline sixes. The A bank, or right hand side, is the inline six that is orientated in the normal direction. The B bank, left hand side, is the inversed inline six. When 1A fires, 6B fires simultaneously. This negates any vibration that otherwise would have been caused by the firing of a cylinder. V-10's cannot have a firing order like this due to fact that it has 10 cylinders. Hopefully this is an understandable explanation as to why V-12's are better balanced.

^ interesting. Just explain for my understanding, if it's not too much trouble, why is the V10 inherently imbalanced compared with the V12?

What's all the hype about a V-10? They don't run smooth at all. If one does, it has so much artificial balancers just sucking up horsepower. V-10's are a terrible, inefficient design. If you want a real "super car," get something with a V-12 that is, by nature of the design, well balanced. I'd rather have the extra few pounds of a V-12 and get the higher quality, smoother running engine.

Was pretty excited two days ago when I had the chance to take a Corvette Z06 for a spin on a local track. I handles pretty well and it's a sweet looking car but it's made of the worst kind of plastic imaginable and the overall quality seems poor compared to, well, the R8. I mean: Stuff fell of this car while driving it!

By the way: The R8 is offered at an impressive $ 430k and the Z06 at $324k here in Denmark. That's a lot of bread! :-(

Mclaren: You forget pricing. The R8 with the RS4's V8 is offered at about $120k here in the US. This "R10" will surely be priced accordingly, leaving the choice between the Gallardo or an R10 purely brand-biased. In my opinion, between buying a Gallardo or a R10 for a similar price, I'd take the Lambo. Sure the Audi is hot, but at the end of the day, it says Lamborghini on my keys. I believe the vast majority of people would take the Lambo too, even some Audi enthusiasts. Besides, I'd bet money Audi will produce a very limited number of these R10s.

The real cars are certainly not GM cars. GM has many of the worst cars in the market including the corvette which feels like rubbish. This Audi looks and I am sure drives fantastically. If Audi does produce this R8 with the V10TT, I am sure there will be a huge waiting list.

exceed the 580bhp limit this thing would be sweet with 605bhp. it would definetly outrun a 911 turbo and the gallardo as for GM SALES ha ha thats one active imagination for a 3 year old

CTS, I have no qualms about the middle class cars, I couldn't afford 100k either. I am just so sick of hearing about the corvette zZzZz. And when I say drag racing nobodies, I say it because a drag race is a competition mostly about who has the most cash in their ride. Real skills are tested on the track, or on the mountain, and I don't see many Vettes on the mountain; and thank god most of the Vettes on the track dont go out and drag all over the freeway after.

F3INT))AP3X, no audi makes me drool period.
now porsche is a different story.
now again why is it most people think only the extremely rich are the ones that deserve to drive a fast car? i cant afford anything over 100grand so i deserve to be slow?
this is a nice car but waaaaaay out of my price range, and you said it so SNOBBILY too (which just proves my point) "drag racing nobodys", money and a car do not make you a somebody.

now again why is it most people think only the extremely rich are the ones that deserve to drive a fast car? i cant afford anything over 100grand so i deserve to be slow?
this is a nice car but waaaaaay out of my price range, and you said it so SNOBBILY too (which just proves my point) “drag racing nobodys”, money and a car do not make you a somebody.

HAHA! My dad had a 5000 turbo and it smoldered to a crispy BLACK color as I sat by the window inside drinking cocoa. It was a shame the car was a pretty sweet ride lookin back.

GM SALES...hilarious once again. "Audis are fire hazards" why, because there's one picture of an R8 burning on the web? The Audi 5000, now that's another story

It's as simple as this, the R8 has a sort of classic beauty clashed with modern design cues (carbon fiber, etc) that sets it apart from any car under its price class. I would rather be rolling down the street in 1st gear all day with it than be caught driving another no-namer vette. The car companies *chevy*cough* make 500 horsepower so affordable that we now, or at least where i live, have tons of these drag racing nobodies flying around everywhere. 420 horses, 530, 580, whatever; at the end of the day your the guy with the Audi that makes everyone druel.

I think Audi put itself in an interesting spot with this car. On one hand you want to offer better performance then lesser price cars such as the Vette and Viper (I dont care what some of you say, no one, I mean no one, in a 100K+ performance car wants to be blown away by a lesser priced car no matter how much more "refined" the more expensive car may be)On the other hand, making the R8 more powerful my infringe on a class of car normally reserved for the R8s platform mate the Gallardo.

Will this car burn to the ground like the rest of them? Audi's are fire hazards with glitzy interiors, what a waste of money.

Cool. McLaren, the Gallardo will sell on cachet alone. If you're looking for an Italian exotic, you'll eye Ferrari and Lambo. You won't be swayed by a horsepower discrepancy, otherwise everyone would be buying Vettes and Vipers.

What Audi is doing is taking the company they aquired (Lamborghini) and embarassing it by producing a more powerful car that will be either cheaper or the same price. This is making the Gallardo redundant and I don't know how Audi plans on making Lambo succeed if it produces cars like this off the same platform. I love Lamborghini and I love what Audi did with them before this. Stick to the base model, it's already a sweet car and allows space for the Gallardo to breathe, as well as the Murcielago.
