A six-speed automatic transmisison now comes standard on 5.7-liter HEMI V8-powered versions of Ram’s 2500 and 3500 HD models for 2012.

Replacing a five-speed unit, the new automatic features Electronic Range Select and tow/haul capability. Ram hasn’t said how much the six-speed unit will help fuel economy and the automaker also won’t release gear ratios until closer to the 2012 model’s launch later this year.

The six-speed automatic might make its way into Ram’s 1500 models soon, although so far Chrysler is remaining mum about any further details. The automaker will launch a new eight-speed automatic for rear-wheel-drive powertrains equipped with the 5.7-liter HEMI in its car divisions and it’s expected that that transmission could also be offered in the Ram 1500.
