FCA confirms new midsize Ram pickup

The Dakota successor will be built alongside the Jeep Wrangler pickup.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has confirmed plans to launch a new Ram midsize pickup.

Just a few years ago the company dismissed the idea of building a rival to the Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon and Toyota Tacoma. The outlook changed in 2016, however, as executives watched the midsize segment continue to grow.

FCA's new CEO, former Ram boss Mike Manley, argued in 2016 that there will be enough demand in the midsize segment to accommodate both the Jeep Wrangler-based pickup and the Ram-badged successor to the Dodge Dakota (pictured).

A presentation slide from FCA's Capital Markets Day shows the new model on the roadmap for 2022, slotting below the Ram 1500. The full-size nameplate will also get a new TRX variant the same year.

FCA expects the expanded pickup lineup to help boost Ram sales from an estimated 770,000 units this year to as high as a million units by 2022.

As expected, the midsize Ram will be built in Ohio alongside the Wrangler pickup.
