Nissan has just announced that it will be issuing voluntary recalls for two separate issues that can affect many of its SUVs, trucks and one minivan. The first recall involves a brake pin that can become disengaged and result in a loss of braking – the second issue involves potentially faulty fuel gauges in high-mileage vehicles.

According to Nissan , the two recalls announced today will involve 539,864 vehicles worldwide – with the United States holding the lion’s share. Nissan says that 178,916 vehicles will be involved in the brake pin recall, and 418,865 vehicles will be involved in the fuel gauge recall with overlapping coverage between the two recalls. All told, 597,781 repairs are due to be performed on U.S. vehicles, with another 79,122 repairs needed in other world markets.

Although Nissan is calling both these recalls voluntary recalls, the first recall, involving 178,916 2008-10 Nissan Titan s, Armadas, Quests and Infiniti QX56 SUVs, is centered around a pin that can become partially disengaged and result in a loss of braking. Nissan blames the problem on a manufacturing error by a part supplier – not a design flaw.

The second issue involves the 2005 through 2008 Titan, Armada and Infiniti QX56, as well as the Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra produced between January and March 2006, and October 2007 and January 2008. These vehicles total 418,865 in the U.S. alone, and according to Nissan, can display inaccurate fuel readings when they reach higher mileage levels. The problem usually involves a faulty higher reading, which can result in drivers running out of gas.

Nissan plans to notify owners of the affected vehicles so they can bring them into dealers for an inspection, and if necessary, repair the problems.
